About this deal

I thought this was going to be a story about her finding herself and I was hoping the ending would follow suit but then it just felt like such a let-down for me. If you've ever asked yourself "where has the time gone and why does everyone else have it together but me? I enjoy this dynamic with my own brother and it was really fun to watch how much love there is between them. Yeah, they patched up and everything but it was unfair to Nell and I was mad on her behalf I guess because Nell forgave too quickly. Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter is out now in eBook and will be published in hardback by Macmillan on 31st December 2020.

I actually read the first look of this over on Readers First and thought it was such an uplifting and fun book; and I felt that way for perhaps the first half, but then i just began to feel very cliche and the ending was just really disappointing for me. New yummy mummy Annabel has entered the group since Nell has been in America and she seems to be asserting her dominance over Nell’s best friend Fiona, who is completely enamoured with her. Laugh-out-loud funny and painfully relatable, Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up is a celebration of friendship and a reminder that while life doesn’t always go according to plan, it doesn’t mean you can’t find happiness. I may have to stop listening to this story because of that - even if I wished to continue - don't want all this bothering over volume levels. So, all that said, I just loved reading as she sorted things out and started (re)building a life she could be proud of. It's actually taken me months to review it because I had such a book hangover when it was done and I just wasn't sure what I was going to say except: READ THIS BOOK. At the beginning, she came across as a bitter, snarky woman and I worried that would be something that was going to stick with me for 500 pages but thankfully, it didn’t! Plenty of the pages made me laugh and smile, and there were a lot of interesting issues raised within the story.

Finally they can gather at each other's houses with no restrictions, they can go to the pub and enjoy a drink and they can even have weddings again! With grateful thanks to NetGalley, Pan MacMillan and Alexandra Potter for my advance ebook in exchange for an honest review.

A common theme, hashtag 'live your best life' hashtag 'gluten free brownies rock' etcetera etcetera (I take some poetic license there). Interspersed between the narrative are references to Nell’s entertaining podcast, along with her notebook entries on what she is grateful for each day. Whilst sharing the flat with not only Edward and their dog, but also his two teenage sons, a surprise pregnancy test throws Nell's world into a spin.

In her forties and feeling like a failure and so far removed from all these bullocky and unrealistic bloody hashtags, she is childless and feeling more than less than. Mums get brilliant TV series like ‘Motherland’ (which I’m considering watching for the 3rd time this lockdown). Together they begin to help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned, and push each other into new adventures and joy. I was thrilled when I heard a second Confessions book was written and delighted to be approved by NetGalley to read and review! I feel like this book could have been so well done because there were some really good moments and i like the message that we're all told we're fuck ups and we're not, I just wish it came across more in the whole book.I despaired with Nell as she dealt with a number of common problems faced by forty somethings, there were funny moments, but also areas of pure understanding. She also decides to start an anonymous podcast and talk about what it’s like to start over at forty something and not have her life be where she thought it would be at this stage in her life. It's a subtle reminder that folks that age have a lot more going on than we may think and they definitely have way more stories to share than the friends who are your own age. Alongside the love story is the wonderful unlikely friendship that sparks between Nell and Cricket, an elderly lady who is just a marvelous character!

You could read it as a standalone book, as the beginning does a great recap of book one, yet there's loads more new content to laugh at and enjoy.

I haven’t laughed so much for a long time and I can’t remember a book that had me smiling in lots of. In this book she is still grieving her husband but, much like the rest of us, she is trying to grow and live. PLEASE NOTE: The publication date for Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k- Up has been pushed back to 31st December 2020. I totally agree one should never judge a book by its genre, it’s kind of not fair to the author, because after all isn’t it the editor/publishing house/agent that decide on the genre classification? Mike Gayle, author of All The Lonely People Nell’s journey to mid-life happiness is hilarious, moving and filled with clear-eyed wisdom about what it means to be a woman of any age, proving that the best happy ever afters come when you fall in love with life.
