About this deal

Brunner’s masterpiece is a disorienting trip into the future which is actually our past. The disorientation stems from the staccato writing style mixing journalism, headings, excepts, and vignettes to the scattered narrative following the author’s inspiration, John Dos Passos’ classic USA Trilogy (reviewed by yours truly here on Goodreads). He is writing in the craziness of 1968 (think Sgt Peppers, Summer of Love, Vietnam War escalation, war protests on college campuses, etc) about the distant (for him) 2010 and while he misses on some things (we are not yet controlled by eugenics) he nails others (corporate takeover of politics, slates are basically somewhere between iPhones and iPads) and especially the user interface of the Shal AI supercomputer which is scarily similar to that of ChatGPT. For the reader in 2023 or later, this reads like alternative history rather than sci-fi, but doesn’t feel hokey or outdated. One of the major characters, Chad Mulligan, has quotes from his books here and there and comes into the narrative late in the story, reminded me a lot of Heinlein’s stand-in Jubal Harshaw in Stranger in a Strange Land.

Beach & Beyond – Zanzibar Island is home to mile upon mile of jaw-droppingly beautiful beaches. Top spots include the northern beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, whilst you can swim with dolphins at Kizimkazi and spot small reef sharks and the odd manta ray whilst scuba diving there. Soak up the sunshine on sugar-like sands whilst doing the absolute minimum, or try your hand at adrenaline-pumping water sports. PROFILE OF NOVEL: Stand on Zanzibar was written by John Brunner in 1968. it is a New Wave science fiction novel about a future dystopia. it won the Hugo Award in 1969. it won my heart and mind in 1990. i just reread it. The town is worth a night or two in my opinion if you have the time on your trip. Nungwi and Kendwa Group sizes tend to be a little larger on our overland Camping Safaris (with an average of 24), providing a social and fun travel experience with like-minded travellers. Group participation is all part of the experience, helping to set up camp, shop for local produce and cook meals, all creates great camaraderie. Many of the hotels around the island have spas, but one of the best places is the Mrembo Spain Stone Town which offers lots of gorgeous treatments, including Singo, a scrub traditionally used by Swahili women on their wedding day!

Combine idyllic Zanzibar island with a safari adventure in East Africa with our range of Zanzibar trips and tours.

The building was built by an Omani slave trader and later turned into an English Club, now it’s a hotel and bar. The decor of the hotel is a mix of Zanzibari and colonial style and whilst it’s not cheap, it has a lovely terrace that looks out over the ocean. You’ll see traditional dhows sail past as the sun slowly sets below the horizon. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre and one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been to in my entire life. Seriously. Friday afternoon, messaging with my work-husband (who has, more accurately, been my long-distance-work-husband for 18 months).

The beach in Stone Town, whilst not idyllic like those outside of the city, is usually busy with both locals and tourists enjoying the early evening light and splashing about in the water. Matemwe:Very chilled, village life, unspoiled by tourism, close to Mnemba Atoll. Try one of these highly recommended hotels. Some passages are far too long, some plots unnecessary, and the newsflashes could mostly be ignored. But these details are part of the fascination of the work, so each reader can decide if she/he wants to just go with the main plot and thereby reduce the length or enjoy the full picture of the madness. Stand on Zanzibar is a dystopian New Wave science fiction novel written by John Brunner and first published in 1968. The book won a Hugo Award for Best Novel at the 27th World Science Fiction Convention in 1969, as well as the 1969 BSFA Award and the 1973 Prix Tour-Apollo Award.Norman, what in God's name is it worth to be human, if we have to be saved from ourselves by a machine?" In addition to his fiction, Brunner wrote poetry and many unpaid articles in a variety of publications, particularly fanzines, but also 13 letters to the New Scientist and an article about the educational relevance of science fiction in Physics Education. Brunner was an active member of the organisation Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and wrote the words to "The H-Bomb's Thunder", which was sung on the Aldermaston Marches. Mr. and Mrs. Everywhere go everywhere... just for you! watch them from the comfort of your living room, on your television! they look just like you! * Pongwe:Pretty beach resort, not as crowded as the others, very chilled. Try The Island – Pongwe Lodge, a very cool hotel set on a little island off the coast. Or for some real luxury, the Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort.

Each evening, at Forodhani Gardens on the seafront of Stone Town, street vendors set up their stalls, selling seafood and meat kebabs, samosas, urojo soup (Zanzibar Mix), fruit, grilled maize, Zanzibar pizzas, and sugar cane juice to tourists and locals alike.
