About this deal

Associate Professor Lisa Marzano, Middlesex University said:“I am pleased to support Samaritans’ latest phase of Small Talk Saves Lives. This important campaign remains a testament to the fact that we can all play a crucial role in preventing suicide and help someone who may be in need by looking out for one another. It could save lives.” Small Talk Saves Lives encourages passengers to notice what may be warning signs e.g. a person standing alone and isolated, looking distant or withdrawn, staying on the platform a long time without boarding a train or displaying something out of the ordinary in their behaviour or appearance. There is no single sign or combination of behaviours that mean a person is suicidal but, if something doesn’t feel right, the message is to act. Three out of five of those polled said they were generally supportive of the principle of industrial action, while just 35% were generally opposed, PA Media reported. The rail strikes aren’t having the impact that unions “might have hoped” for, according to the Department for Transport.

Downing Street has said it will “not give in” to demands from rail unions as Boris Johnson warned commuters they must “stay the course”. The prime minister’s spokesperson said Johnson believed it was “in the long-term interest of both the country and the public to not give in” to demands that he claimed would “stop us being able to modernise the railways”. A Labour shadow minister has said it is “perfectly reasonable” for the party’s Scottish leader to take a different stance on the rail strikes to Keir Starmer. Today we will be serving a notice on Royal Mail Group over a pay claim - our claim for an inflation-based, no-strings pay award. A survey of people who travel by train, carried out for the campaign, revealed more than 4 out of 5 would approach someone who may be suicidal if they knew the signs to look out for, what to say, and that they wouldn’t make the situation worse. An even higher number, nearly 9 out of 10, thought a person in need of support would find it hard to ask for help.**These are desperately needed reforms that modernise the railway and put it on a sustainable footing for passengers and taxpayers. In 2016/17, there were 6.7 potentially life-saving interventions made for every suicide or suspected suicide on the railway. Figures calculated using data from the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) and British Transport Police (BTP).

It is] a good solid pay rise and we’ve met the other things they told us were really important to them, like a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies, and that changes would be agreed with them. They were the three things in dispute with us and we’ve met every single one of them. We still found time to smile and laugh, too, discussing the Whitney Stakes, analyzing the electrifying results of Fasig-Tipton Saratoga and struggling to remember how our yearling naming contest worked, even as we announced the winner. British Transport Police Chief Constable, Paul Crowther, national strategic policing lead for suicide prevention, said:“Our officers make lifesaving interventions on the railway every day, together with rail staff and members of the public. We know from experience that when someone is in distress, simply engaging them in conversation can make all the difference and help set them on the road to recovery. It makes sense to let the public know that this simple act can help. We’re not suggesting people intervene if they don’t feel comfortable or safe to do so. They can tell a member of rail staff or a police officer – many of whom have been trained by Samaritans – or call 999.” However, a separate poll of 2,516 adults, published by YouGov on Tuesday afternoon, suggested only 37% of people were supportive of the strike this week, while 45% said they opposed it.The campaign draws on insights from successful interventions made by some of the 16,000 rail staff and BTP officers who’ve been trained by Samaritans in suicide prevention. For each life lost on the railway, six are saved.*** The hope is that by appealing to members of the public, the number of life-saving interventions being made across Britain will increase further. Get in touch with us if you have a specific subject you would want us to cover at [email protected] Amid widespread industrial action across rail services, postal workers are also set to vote over whether to strike in a row over pay, it was announced today. More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers will be balloted in the coming weeks on whether to launch a campaign of industrial action. Small Talk Saves Lives has been developed after research showed passengers have a key role to play in suicide prevention. * Further research showed the majority are willing to act, but many wanted guidance on how to help, and reassurance they wouldn’t ‘make things worse’. **

On Sunday night, a rail industry source said there was a “sliver of hope” of a resolution, with talks between the rail industry and unions continuing into the evening after starting at 2pm. Nevertheless, the two sides still appeared far apart on many of the main issues. For full terms & conditions please visit talktalk.co.uk/legal. Registered in England: Company number 4633015. What will be interesting over the coming days is to what extent the public mood changes. Fieldwork here was conducted before the strike began. After a week of coverage of likely disruption, will the public be as sympathetic? Louise Haigh, the shadow transport secretary, wrote to Shapps on Sunday night to say: “The only way to sort this out is for your government to stop boycotting the talks and get around the table.
