I was absolutely blown away by the artistic yet abstract prose, which was clearly thought out with the utmost strategy to define these characters' personalities despite the whirlwind of their drink and drug-fuelled lives. This is definitely a book that makes you want to put pen to paper and recount your own stories. This unexpectedly wonderful (and please note extremely vulgar) novel is being bandied around as “Withnail with girls”. That’s the quote on the front. For those who do not know the cult 1987 British movie Withnail and I you should know that Withnail, a skeletal out of work actor, exists in only three conditions; first is drunk, in which he says things like Later, on a trip to London for Tyler's nephew's christening, the two run into Marty, who went to school with Tyler. Claiming her phone is dead, Tyler has Laura exchange numbers with Marty, who later sends her a picture of his erect penis.

I definitely thought things were going in a certain direction with Laura (our protagonist) being caught between her state of comfortable arrested development and the potential of growth (the vehicle of which seems to be her relationship with Jim, who is over the constant drugs and drinking and questionable antics). And, to make it worse, nothing specific has triggered such a life changing moment, other than the fact you’ve both drifted apart. Bury-born Emma is building up quite a reputation for opening up discussions about ‘taboo’ issues that are rarely spoken of. Inevitably the dynamics of the various relationships change, and more so after they become friends with a poet, Marty, to whom Laura is attracted, and his circle of literary friends. Laura struggles to make progress with her novel throughout the film. Animals is the second novel of British writer Emma Jane Unsworth. The book was published in 2014 by Canongate Books in the U.K. and HarperCollins in the U.S. and Canada.Best friends Laura, a struggling writer working as a barista, and her best friend and flatmate Tyler, an American woman who is estranged from her family, are both heavy partiers living in Dublin. The early part of the film shows their close friendship in their late twenties as they consume large quantities of wine and drugs through the night, sometimes engaging in casual sex with a man but mostly just enjoying each other's company.
