About this deal

You’ll also find Progressive Layering—a multi-density foam construction that saves weight and allows the Vanquish to help manage a wide range of impact energies. Without going to a wind tunnel and undergoing specific testing it's difficult to really quantify just how much faster the Vanquish is over an open style road helmet but I can say that I pulled up several Strava PRs on the first ride with the helmet (on segments I ride regularly). The aerodynamic Eclipse Spherical is our most sophisticated, stylish, and lightweight aero road helmet, and it's crafted with Spherical Technology powered by Mips®, so you can ride with more comfort and an additional layer of protection.

While aero road helmets of old may have been fast, they were prone to overheating – but not with the Eclipse, Giro says. No I wouldn’t – I don’t need to be more aero, I’m not a good enough rider to appreciate the difference – but I can understand the appeal of the Vanquish. True to claims, ventilation performance seemed better with the shield in place than stowed, too (perhaps due to the fact that doing so partially obscures the forward-facing vents).Giro claims that the Vanquish MIPS with the eye shield fitted has lower drag than the Air Attack with an eye shield fitted – the equivalent of 1. This new system creates a small layer of air between your head and the helmet, so that the helmet floats just above your head, as it were.

I use the helmet both with contact lenses and prescription glasses (Oakleys, they fit, just touching slightly the visor, I put some transparent tape inside the visor where the edges of the glasses touch). It also features reflective details for visibility in low light conditions, quick-drying internal padding, an insect net to keep critters out of your locks, and a ratchet lock for easy securing. Registered office: Icknield Street Drive, Washford West, Redditch, Worcestershire, England, B98 0DE. I previously own a Giro Air Attack who developed the same problem but only after 4 years – 24,000km; not 3 months. The clever magnetic system keeps the visor secure while keeping it easy enough to remove on the fly with it also sitting neatly on the top of the helmet when flipped around. Giro's Vanquish MIPS is a well-designed aero road helmet with a great fit system, and it comes with innovative new technology designed to reduce drag. The In-Mold Construction combines a strong polycarbonate outer shell with shock absorbing helmet padding.

The progressive design has positioned it more as an everyday lid rather than an event-specific helmet, but the lack of ventilation could pose an issue when used throughout the warmer months. The Agilis MIPS steps beyond the road, combining design cues from the Synthe and Giro's mountain bike range to create a road styled helmet with increased levels of protection. The new Vanquish MIPS shares a number of characteristics with other aero road helmets, in particular a mostly smooth exterior, a close-fitting and highly tapered profile, and a short, squared-off tail. During riding, the helmet ventilates well, with the cold days even too well, for hot days where there is a lot of climbing, I would personally choose a more open helmet because the helmet ventilates less well, until you make enough speed in the descent. If I had done these same efforts in the middle of January when the temperature is over 20 degree lower then I wouldn’t have had an issue, in fact it would have helped in keeping me warm.First seen in the WorldTour peloton last year, Giro’s new Eclipse Spherical aero helmet slips the brand’s unique twin-shell MIPS slip-plane protection into a compact and comfortably ventilated lid that it claims is also its most aerodynamic helmet ever tested. I really like the little extended tab on the antimicrobial Ionic+ brow pad that helps ease it on and will presumably reduce the chance of the pad peeling back over time. According to Giro, this double-layer design is better at absorbing impact energy from a wider range of crash severities than any single-density design. Designed to deliver greater depth and contrast to your vision, the removable Zeiss-developed lens can be stowed away by flipping it upside down or ditched entirely for regular shades, it’s your choice. As the name suggests, a low-friction MIPS liner is included as standard equipment, with the claimed benefit of reducing rotational forces transmitted to the brain — and, thus, the chances of a traumatic brain injury — during an impact.
