Tip the dough out on to a lightly floured work surface. Knead by hand incorporating the sultanas and mixed peel into the dough. Lightly knead for 10 minutes until silky and elastic and forming a smooth ball. (The kneading can also be done in a food mixer with a dough hook.) Oil a bowl and place the dough in a bowl, cover with cling film and leave to rest in a warm place for about 1½ hours or until doubled in size. This debut novel is a reimagining of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of the quiet middle sister, Mary Bennet. Rebels in the North of England, including Lord Hussey, Mary's former chamberlain, campaigned against Henry's religious reforms, and one of their demands was that Mary be made legitimate. The rebellion, known as the Pilgrimage of Grace, was ruthlessly suppressed. [51] Along with other rebels, Hussey was executed, but there is no suggestion that Mary was directly involved. [52] In 1537, Queen Jane died after giving birth to a son, Edward. Mary was made godmother to her half-brother and acted as chief mourner at the queen's funeral. I would definitely read more by this author. I like her writing style. The story concept is interesting and very creative. The tale kept my attention from beginning to end, even if I did disagree with some of the characterizations and events. Mary Tudor: The Tragical History of the First Queen of England. Kew, Richmond, UK: National Archives. —— (2011). Mary Tudor. Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK: Amberley Publishing. It's honestly like it's fan fiction written BY Mary. Lizzy has bad teeth, and suddenly only cares for parties and balls. Charlotte Lucas Collings becomes fat and imperious, and tries to keep Mary as an unpaid servant. I mean, just everybody comes out badly but Mary and Mr. Darcy. At first I thought it was just a poor understanding of the source material, which is the reason I don't like a lot of unofficial sequels. But, especially in the beginning, I feel like Chen knows P&P. But as the book goes on it becomes clear that she just doesn't care. She casts the original characters aside in favor of carrying out a mass character assassination. There is literally no reason why Lizzy cannot be kind to Mary. Why Charlotte acts the way she does. And oh, gosh, GEORGIANA. Sweet and innocent Georgiana Darcy is a total bitch who tries to smash Mary's hands in a piano just for touching her instrument! A new, wholly original perspective on the classic . . . Chen’s novel gives fans and non-fans a heroine who seeks a rich, independent life, in spite of the limits society has placed on her. This is the ultimate Austen adaptation for our time.” — Real Simple In Katherine J. Chen’s ingenious debut novel, “Mary B” (Random House, 322pp., ★★★½out of four), the title character gets some attitude, and a measure of revenge, in a story that inhabits and critiques Austen’s novel. “I, too, hoped quietly for romance and also for marriage as much as any of my sisters did,” she insists. She’s just disinclined to compromise her intelligence to achieve them. Robbins began his career promoting seminars for Jim Rohn, a motivational speaker. He then started his own seminars and published his first book, “Unlimited Power,” in 1987. Since then, he has written several best-selling books, including “Awaken the Giant Within” and “Money: Master the Game.”

I have to admit that I never really wondered what happened to Mary Bennett after the closing lines of Pride & Prejudice. And I smiled and laughed at the subtle humor Jane Austen used in portraying Mary's opinions, her unattractiveness, and sullen behavior in social situations in comparison with her other four sisters. I glossed over Mary as just a plot point, an unimportant side character. I never really gave her much thought. Until now. But the total distortion of the characters is on the author. Lizzie Bennet becomes a hypocrite and a whiner (actually, everyone whines), Mary an object of pity as her sisters, harridans and idiots by turn, torment her for her philosophical and poetic interests as well as her terrible looks. (Even the preternaturally bright and observant Mary doesn't seem to be aware that Kitty is just as undistinguished.) Melt the butter in a pan and warm the milk in a separate pan. Add the butter and half the tepid milk to the dry ingredients. Add the egg and use your hands to bring the mixture together, incorporating the flour from the edges of the bowl as you go. Gradually add the remaining milk, to form a soft pliable dough (you may not need all of the milk).

Gloom, despair, and agony on me… Deep, dark depression, excessive misery…” GLOOM, DESPAIR AND AGONY ON ME From the TV show “Hee-Haw” (1969 – 1992) Buch Owens & Roy Clark Mary was courted by Philip, Duke of Bavaria, from late 1539, but he was Lutheran and his suit for her hand was unsuccessful. [54] Over 1539, the king's chief minister, Thomas Cromwell, negotiated a potential alliance with the Duchy of Cleves. Suggestions that Mary marry William I, Duke of Cleves, who was the same age, came to nothing, but a match between Henry and the Duke's sister Anne was agreed. [55] When the king saw Anne for the first time in late December 1539, a week before the scheduled wedding, he found her unattractive but was unable, for diplomatic reasons and without a suitable pretext, to cancel the marriage. [56] Cromwell fell from favour and was arrested for treason in June 1540; one of the unlikely charges against him was that he had plotted to marry Mary himself. [57] Anne consented to the annulment of the marriage, which had not been consummated, and Cromwell was beheaded. [58] Katherine Chen takes major characters and adds to their stories in ways that were difficult to swallow. In that way, it reminded me of Longbourn. And I'm not even what you would call an Austenite.
