About this deal

Georgie Bell, the Global Malts Ambassador for Bacardi, brought a few bottles of this very very limited release to South Africa and I was fortunate to try it. The team at Craigellachie should be applauded for releasing special bottles in large numbers, as it puts off the flippers and rewards the drinkers. The scarce presence of single malt Craigellachie beyond independent bottlings makes this a splendid resurgence, gracing our glasses with its exceptional presence once more!

Upon further reading, I wonder if the famous sulphur note that everyone says is a hallmark of Craigellachie might be hitting my jaded senses as banana. Gold debossing and shoulder bands really make this whisky feel like it’s straight out of the roaring 20s - it wouldn’t look out of place inside Gatsby’s drinks cabinet, that’s for sure. The original purpose of Craigellachie was to provide spirit for blended whiskies; something that remained the case until 2014, when a trio of single malts were released. These are traditionally large wooden vessels full of water in which the whisky passes via coiled copper pipes to cool on its journey to the spirit safe.

The same connection occurred when I nipped into Drinkmonger in Pitlochry at the time when the Ukraine Springbank fiasco was playing out. I think I’ll be replacing it with the core range yellow-label once it’s gone - I just love that drift into the golden ocean too much, and the appearance of citrus blasters keeps shaking me out of my amber haze.

Interestingly enough the word “budget” only arrived after all of that foundation chat had concluded. Both times it has appeared to me to be a middle-weight Speysider with a decent balance of fruit and caramel notes that is otherwise forgettable. I was sipping this dram (and all the refills thereafter) outside, because the sunshine was still splitting the sky and the night was young. yo Craigellaghie is one of my favourite whiskies, I’ve bought and sipped 4 bottles, however, this Bas armagnac cask is a step up, not necessarily in quality, but as a dram sipping experience, beautiful apple and green fruit, juicy fruit goodness great a. Instead of clamming up and whimpering: “I’m just looking thanks,” I proffered my uncertainty, and said that I was new to whisky. They needed a Single Malt as an ingredient for White Horse Blended Scotch, so the distillery was designed to produce a very specific distillery style which the team replicate to this day. Graham is at the consumer end of the whisky world; constantly seeking out a bargains and generally very cautious with his limited budget. The palate offers notes of freshly-baked apples dusted in cinnamon, caramel shortcake, pineapples in syrup and summer bonfires that linger in the finish. I’ve noticed it more as I’ve started talking to others about it, and I’m constantly astounded by the kindness shown by other whisky enthusiasts – not just to me, but to everyone else too. Whisky enthusiasm is a sliding scale and in places such as Royal Mile Whiskies, the people stationed inside are some of the most enthusiastic whisky enjoyers around and clearly know a thing or two about the subject.
