Generation Grado drivers are here. Specifically tuned for the SR80x, this new speaker design features a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with decreased effective mass, and a reconfigured diaphragm. Reengineering these components for our 44mm drivers improve efficiency, reduces distortion, and preserves the harmonic integrity of your music. Grado could have fixed this ages ago, when it introduced the salad bowls with the GS1000 but it has taken an indeviating course and told its customers to simply wash and mash the pads until they crumple with less height.

If you want a very clean, modern high-end with some vintage warmth, the SR80x hits the nail on the head.The pay-off for their exceptionally open and dynamically fluid delivery is one that is pretty leaky, but if you can live with the fact these are headphones best suited for quiet environments and ‘me’ time, you won’t be disappointed.

The moment I placed the SR80x on my large head, I braced for that tight clamping sensation that bother me about my pair of RS2s.

Grado may never give us a cup-like cushion or one with slightly less distance between ear and driver. Right now, the best you can do is to wash and mash your way toward a smoother tonality. Their presentation is up-front, music seeming to ‘start’ close to your ears; the open, well-separated sound doesn’t cling to your eardrums in the way lesser up-front headphones might make it. The earpad style is unorthodox too. They are round slabs of foam, less soft and more scratchy than just about any alternative we could mention. The L Cush pads open things up a bit, both in treble and soundstage but they’re not as comfortable. They’re really just imperfect circumaural pads in disguise. I don’t know anybody who keeps their ears on those pads. Everybody hides their earlobe inside, which means that part of your ear is pressed up against the plastic grill. That gets painful. More importantly, it’s not open enough to get the top end or widen the soundstage to its full potential.
