About this deal

By the way, while I'm talking about purging coffee beans – do you purge some coffee each time you adjust your grind while dialing in? The machine can also grind consistently enough for pour over. However, the more coarse the grind, the less consistency you will find, which is in keeping with most grinders. There are also a greater number of fine particles than many other conical burr grinders.

My classic under the hood shots, what's inside the grinder. Many people will probably never open their grinders although you should open for a good cleaning ever so often. Make sure to follow the manufacturers guidelines for maintenance. The Specialita was released in 2018, and so far, I haven’t heard anybody complain about long term issues. One of the hottest topics in espresso recently has been single dosing and “zero” retention grinders.A similarly sized grinder, and also another very popular grinder is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro. There’s a broader spectrum of flavors compared to the conical burrs, especially when it comes to aftertaste and the more fruity notes.

Once you get your grind dialed in fairly close, there are + and - buttons on the display to change the shot grinding time. Again I recommend using a scale to get as close to your desired shot weight as possible.

Again we've got 55mm burrs, but with the brew pro, they're the slightly different burr design made with manual brew in mind rather than espresso, although these burrs will also work for espresso, they're slightly modified with the aim of improving grinds consistency at coarser grind settings. That is if you can get hold of one, as they're in huge demand – as soon as the next batch lands in the UK they usually sell out within days. The static was terrible, especially in the winter. These mostly plastic grinders just clung to the grounds and any chaff. The counter was usually a mess, there was a bit of waste. A definite annoyance. I've mentioned the Eureka Mignon coffee grinder in other recent posts including my best espresso machines post, but I've been meaning to write a dedicated post on the Eureka Mignon grinder for a while, so here goes.

Eureka Mignon is one of the top household automatic grinders on the market. Specialita is the newest and the highest version of the Mignon range. The grinder is compact and suitable for various brewing methods, from espresso to French press, and provides consistent grinding. Also, sometimes I feel like I’m a little bit too close to the zero point where the burrs are touching. It mostly happens when I’m grinding Scandinavian espresso beans for the Robot – this requires an ultra-fine grind – then I’m pretty close to burr rub. Ora Mignon XLis the latest (and highest-end) in the range, released in 2020 to mark the company’s centenary. It bridges the gap between the Mignon and Atom grinders in both technology and cost. This device has 65mm burrs, but in other areas, it is similar to the other Mignon grinders. However, the retention is, impressively, only 0.2 grams in this grinder.
