About this deal

The midbass region of the NextDrive Spectra X has slightly more weight compared to the subbass area and shows a tight and pretty controlled presentation. The bass of the NextDrive Spectra X is in general fast and pretty controlled, without to show any unnecessary mixings and situations like muddiness. NextDrive champions the Spectra X as one of the smallest DAC/Amps around, and there’s definitely some truth to that. The piece itself is quite long but very narrow and easy to store. The device is lightweight but highly durable, with an aluminum chassis and an extra-long, flexible cable. If I could compare the size to anything, it’s like a small pen attached to your device. NextDrive sports a few different input options as far as sources go. I was given the USB-Type C connector, but Type A and B versions are also available. Type C was perfect to use for my android phone, but standard USB is more friendly to use with desktop and gaming devices. It’s a great little DAC and whilst not cheap it goes a long way to turning your phone into an excellent sounding audiophile DAP. Build quality marks will be top notch here, no doubt, the more I play with it and handle it, the more I enjoy how nice it is to not have to move anything around in my portable setup. And yes, I do use this on my Android phone, and often. my 2nd pair spectra had been in use for roughly 2-3 months, i used it for about 1-2hours on each working day. the same problem of broken signal on one channel happened AGAIN. now i am very certain it is a design flaw on this product. after a period of usage, probably the glue inside the spectra dissolved a bit, parts loose, and had such problem.

I used the Spectra X with the Campfire Audio Solaris, JH Audio Roxanne, and Fearless Audio S8 Pro for the purpose of this review, and never once did I question its capability to drive them. Comparisons Spectra X vs Dragonfly The treble range has a nice tonality which is neither too bright nor recessed in its presentation. The treble performance of the Spectra X in terms extension and detail retrieval is pretty good and I couldn’t hear any remarkable sibilance or harshness for that I can complaint.

The NextDrive Spectra X is a portable DAC/AMP in a form of a USB Dongle/Adapter that gave me the message that it is a premium product when I have held it in my hands. It has a slightly longer profile compared to other dongles on the market and weights about 17grams. The situation with Hifiman HE-400i was a bit better with slightly more volume. I could listen at 75% to 80%. Again, I could not detect distortion at max volume which was good. Early users of the Spectre X simulator include MediaTek, Mellanox, Renasas, and Silicon Works.Ching San Wu, the General Manager of Analog Design and Circuit Technology for MediaTek detailed their experience:

The Spectra X that I will now review for you is a portable DAC/AMP adapter/dongle for devices like Android Smartphone’s & Tablet’s, Laptop’s or PC’s and is available in USB Type-C and USB A connector variants. In version 10.0, rigorous estimation of brilliance based on the Wigner function method has become available, which is in contrast to the traditional method based on the Gaussian approximation. Although the brilliance estimation by the Gaussian approximation is still available for compatibility with the older versions, it is referred to as GA.Brilliance (Gaussian-Approximated) and is distinguished from the rigorous estimation.

The Spectre X simulator allows massive parallelization of long simulation runs across up to 128 CPU cores, and across multiple machines. It can also be run in Cadence Cloud. Spectre X supports the same industry-certified device models and syntax. For mixed-signal verification, it is tightly integrated with the Xcelium Parallel Logic Simulator.
