In the 1970s, his work for Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle revolutionized fashion photography and paved the way for contemporary photography to become more creative and risky. Newton’s years as a fashion photographer had sharpened his eye to the language of pose and gesture. He would instruct his models precisely and deliberately to create the mood he had visualized, with the tension of a muscle, the tilt of a jaw, the lines of the figure coming together to project the metaphor of the Newton woman. His friend Karl Lagerfeld, in his introduction to 47 Nudes – the 1982 book that included the first Big Nudes series – observed: “It used to be said of certain painters that they were the painters of women. Helmut is certainly the photographer of women, but the pictures he takes of them are not necessarily what men expect.” Fashion historian Colin McDowell wrote in a Sunday Times tribute of 8 February 2004 following the photographer’s death: “Tearing away the veil of modesty to reveal the glamorous woman of sexual confidence, he always put her in top position. He posed his models in a way that brought out their masculinity within their femininity. His women were always powerfully beautiful … They attracted and alarmed in equal measure.”

His photographs of women, while often erotically charged, are never demeaning, and are often almost worshipful of their power and sexuality. His work in various fashion magazines was the first to show nude women as empowered and triumphant. If I have very bright sunlight with a lot of speed left over, then it is beautiful to make negatives at an exposure index of 200, which is much better. The current exhibition from the Helmut Newton Foundation, which had its first showing in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, is dedicated to Newton's first three legendary publications. These early photographs, many of which went on to achieve iconic status, stand on the cusp between fashion and nude photography and were never shown together in his own lifetime.
