About this deal

It covers the years of controversy that led up to his resignation in 2018 and his current seat as chief of global football development for Fifa.

Wenger, 70, famously led the club to the best period in their history, including the 2003-04 Premier League-winning Invincibles. And then, later: “If money had been my priority instead of passion or loyalty, I could have earned two or three times more by leaving Arsenal.Asked what he did in life, he proposes that his answer will be that he tried everything within his power to win football matches. On the whole, a book that makes me think I might have been better off waiting for his autobiography, though there's some interesting titbits within its pages. It was also interesting reading about the construction of the new Emirates stadium and the financial restraints that this brought as the club had to pay back the loan that had financed it.

Most of the stories I've read from the papers or social media and since I've forgotten a lot of them, it was nice to read this book to refresh my memory.I suppose this was done to rush the new edition out while his departure was still fresh but it renders parts of the book redundant. I went into it knowing that there would be no Alex Ferguson-esque revelations, no naming and shaming or divulging dressing room bust ups and other behind closed door goings on. As with his approach to on-field matters, this book puts in an impressive performance whilst still leaving areas where improvement is possible. One small oddity is Wenger’s (at least) twice repeated claim that he inherited a mid-table club from Rioch – Arsenal had finished fifth the previous season.

Arsene Wenger doesn't have the amount accolades that other managers like Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho can flaunt, but he has other more substantial attributes like loyalty, class, selflessness, and charm. Were you aware at the time that you were making the fan base more diverse and influencing a new generation? Although the autobiography does touch on individual seasons, games and players, somewhat by necessity – it would be impossible to cover every game in a career spanning three decades in management – the book offers rather much more of an overview of the main points in his career and his reflections on them. He addresses some of the managers faults like his dislike for confrontation, his stubbornness, his micromanagement style, and for lack of a better term being a cheapskate in the transfer market.
