It’s a pretty tricky thing to describe, so I’ve picked out some of my personal laugh out loud moments. I initially struggled to find the sweet spot of the rhythm to his writing style which is hand-in-glove with the sardonic, sarcastic, at-times-puerile, clever humour utilised almost constantly.

In the show it works, but while I thought 3 short stories would be a breeze to get through, it verges on exhausting/painful with just a few funny moments and while this maybe to show how bad an author the character Marenghi is, the plot was hard to follow at times, that or I just mentally timed out. Yeah, it has its moments of hilarity, but the same gag is used over and over, and what at first seems like a new one, it later reveals to be, well, PLOT TWIST, to be the same one with a lot of fat surrounding it. Other than the ridiculous premise, its the little details that make this book work, the quirks that situate us into Marenghi's eighties machismo sensibilities. I immediately took matters into my own hands and drove said batch in the back of a white rental van to a storage depot in Luton, where I'm happy to say most of the books, though not all, survived several major leaks.

These stories continue with Nick as the protagonist, but deal with an ongoing arc of fighting the demons he directly unleashed from his imagination. Collectively, they put (torn and bloody) flesh on the bones of Marenghi’s leaden prose, and added duff, dopey theatricality to the duff, dopey writing that formed the show’s raw material. If you like Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace then you’ll have a good time with this novel/trilogy of linked novellas, all with the kind of so-bad-it’s-good horror clunkiness and hilarious authorial pomposity of the series. The funny-crappiness of Marenghi is a lot less fun when you actually have to read it rather than laugh at it. Which is fine: Holness is sharp, and his conception of the character so involved, that this discussion section can’t help but be amusing.
