The mash bill for this rye whisky contains 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. It is known as a premium whisky because it has at least four years of ageing. This whisky has a higher proof and is drawn from a single barrel that has matured for at least four years. It is regarded as a premium whisky and is noted for its unique flavor.
With a minute population of 361 residents, Lynchburg is located in one of the few counties in North America that maintains an enduring hangover (so to speak) from the restrictive laws of Prohibition, which lasted nationwide from 1917 through to 1933. Tennessee Rye has a 70 per cent rye grain bill with a mix of spice and smoothness. It is charcoal-mellowed and also includes natural spring water from Cave Spring Hollow.

Once distilled, the initially clear spirit is left to drip steadily through a barrel of handcrafted charcoal. This is known as the ‘Charcoal mellowing’ or by locals as the ‘Extra Blessing’. This is a double-mellowed version of Old No. 7, a premium whisky that has been matured for an additional year. It is worth noting that whiskey bottled in the U.S. must be at least 40% ABV (80 proof) by federal law.
It is this process that gives JD its color and precisely defines the whiskey as… Well, a whiskey. And not a bourbon. Categorically a Tennessee whiskey and not a bourbon, the fact has nonetheless been subject to fervent controversy and has spawned heated debates over the years. The brand states (and the government concurs… now) that the famous whiskey is indeed a Tennessee whiskey, and shall be named as such.
