About this deal

Perhaps, reading the whole trilogy at once would be slightly repetitive, but it's comforting knowing what you going into, each time you pick up to continue reading.

The Durrells: what happened to the real-life Durrell children? The Durrells: what happened to the real-life Durrell children?

All three books are set on the enchanted island of Corfu in the 1930s, and tell the story of the eccentic English family who moved there. Gerald Durrell and his second wife, Lee, have had a number of recently discovered animal species named in their honor.

Although he was only 10 years old in these novels, it goes a long way to explain what made Durrell the man he was.

Corfu trilogy - Wikipedia

The Visitors' Centre at the Belize Zoo is named the Gerald Durrell Visitors' Centre in honour of Durrell.Further, he had a falling-out with George Cansdale, superintendent of the London Zoo, and Durrell was blackballed by the British zoo community and could not secure a job in most zoos. More to the point, Corfu doesn’t become over-described by Durrell’s revisited descriptions, but remains a bright, endlessly fascinating jewel of an island. Their tensions add to those already simmering, with a war of words with some locals using illegal fishing methods (which results in the destruction of Leslie's boat) and encountering the legendary Captain Creech, after goats invade their picnic, tipping off the disappointment of finding Larry has emigrated to Paris. No doubt these are highly exaggerated versions, as are the wonderful Corfu characters they befriend and are befriended by.

Recounted with immense humour and charm, this wonderful account of Corfu's natural history reveals a rare, magical childhood. In 1963, he founded the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust (now Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust), on 6 July 1963 to cope with the increasingly difficult challenges of zoo, wildlife and habitat management. The Durrells left the island on the eve of World War Two and during the war, the island was occupied by Italian forces and then, from 1943 until the end of the war, by the Nazis. In 1958 Durrell founded the Jersey Zoological Park (now Durrell Wildlife Park) to house his growing collection of animals. Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family - acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog - take off for the island of Corfu.
