About this deal

The Nimbus 2001 is slightly shorter than the Nimbus 2000, but the bristles on the Nimbus 2001 are much longer than those on the Nimbus 2000. The stirrups on the 2001 are quite large and pivot to make your feet comfortable while sitting in different positions on the broom, whereas the stirrups on the 2000 are relatively small and are in a fixed position.

I don't see any source for their statement, tho. It does look like a possible bit of sloppy plotting, honestly -- but it was the first book, with no guarantee more would be desired, so it's not that surprising. Nimbus 2001 [3] - Released just before the start of Harry's second year in 1992, a year after the Nimbus 2000. Lucius Malfoy bought seven of these to outfit the Slytherin Quidditch team; there's some evidence that this was why his son Draco was made the team's Seeker. That could refer to the simple overriding of the First Years can't have them rule... But, given how much McGonagall grumbled about losing the Quidditch Cup before, I think she arranged it, either on her own, or as part of the normal process of getting a 'Replacement' broom for a worn out one. Of the two, I think getting the school (i.e., Dumbledore) to arrange it is most likely, given her personality. Nimbus 1700 [1] - Brooms which followed the release of the Nimbus 1000 between 1967 and 1990 and ensured the Nimbus Racing Broom Company stayed atop the field of sport brooms. If the new players were not given Nimbus 2001s when they joined the team and did not have brooms of their own, they probably had to use one of the old school brooms. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry's Nimbus 2000 subsequently manages to be faster than Draco's Nimbus 2001, as seen in the Quidditch Match, Gryffindor vs Slytherin. This could be attributed to Harry being a better flyer than Draco due to the fact that Draco bought his way onto the team. On the other hand, they surely have a budget for outfitting the teams; it's possible she just blew the budget for the next year or so on what she considered a good investment, when she got it for him.

Harry Potter received one from Minerva McGonagall when he joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team as the new Seeker. [3] He owned it for two years until the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff Quidditch match in November 1993. Organised by Bloomsbury Publishing for the 2021 Harry Potter Book Night, [8] when the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child read aloud Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 5 ( Diagon Alley) together, Robin Cadet, the actor portraying Craig Bowker Junior in the Hamburg production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, also portrayed one of the boys admiring the Nimbus 2000 during Harry Potter's first trip to Diagon Alley. His lines were "Look, the new Nimbus 2000 – fastest ever – " [9]Surprising as it may sound, it looks like the School provided it. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Wood suggests a Nimbus as a possible choice for Harry to McGonagall, and she agrees, saying that she needs to go talk to the headmaster to see if an exception can be made. It's never explicitly stated who paid for this broom, however it's likely to have been McGonagall herself as she's the one who made arrangements for Harry to receive it and it's unlikely she'd have access to Harry's inheritance to use that to pay for the broom due to McGonagall not being his legal guardian. As far as I know, there is nothing else said about who paid for it specifically, but it sounds like she arranged it through the school. Look at what was in the note attached to it when Harry got it:
