After approx 500 metres turn right at the sign for Longslade View car park. Castleman’s Corkscrew: a walk along an old New Forest railway

The walk is mostly gravel but subject to quite a bit of waterlogging, so wellington boots or waterproof footwear are advisable. There are many appealing areas of heathland and pine woodland in the south west corner of the New Forest and running through them is the Castleman’s Corkscrew. Perfect afternoon tea is always available , we frequently go here for lunch or coffee and cake . With indoor and outdoor seating and our dog is welcome in the outside area. Good service and good food Absolutely abysmal service. It was less... than half full inside, with nobody seated outside. The walk is mostly graveled but subject to quite a bit of waterlogging especially at the Burbush car park end, so wellies are a must except in the driest possible conditions. There are water courses too all along the route so dogs that stray from the path will get dirty! On the way out we were tempted by the amazing looking sweet treats and ended up buying a lemon meringue pie & banoffee pie to take away... with us. My advice is don't even think about trying to get breakfast here, after arriving home from Normandy at midnight on Saturday 17th my wife and I thought it would be nice to have breakfast at Holmsley, where we have had excellent food on other occasions, but we were turned away as we hadn't booked! Since when has it become necessary to book for breakfast and how far in advance do I need to book? Needless to say I will not be returning to Holmsley Tea Rooms again. The growing popularity of the cars in the 1950’s meant a serious assessment was made of the network, culminating in the now infamous Beeching Report in 1963.
