About this deal

You can drive the meandering roads that loop around 40km (25 miles) of shore or take the Lavaux Panoramic Train , but you’ll get a better feel for the Lavaux by heading out on foot. Little trails dip into the vines everywhere, but top billing goes to the 11km (6.8-mile) trail from St-Saphorin to Lutry, where you’ll take in stirring views, pretty villages and welcoming cellars. There are higher mountains in Switzerland than those lining the fjord-like shores of Lake Lucerne , but none are more enshrined in flag-waving Swiss myth. Boat across the emerald waters of Lake Uri, and you’ll glimpse Rütli Meadow, the hallowed birthplace of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. You can also experience the Tellskapelle , a tiny frescoed chapel that is said to be where the apple-shooting hero and beloved Swiss rebel William Tell escaped from the boat of his Hapsburg captor, Gessler.

There is plenty of room, with large red buoys marking the swimming area off from that used by boats. The adventure is just over 2km of downstream floating and I had a stupid grin on my face the whole way. Floating down a fast-flowing city centre river goes against all the “rules” we like to outline to swimmers in the UK: like knowing your exit point, and urban areas being often unclean, unsafe. But this was the perfect way to see the sights. Depending on your entry point, you’d get the prefect downstream flow while the Rhine shows you around the city 😉 You’d enjoy the summer breeze and historic views of Basel while the water current guides you down the stream. If you’d like to experience Swimming in the Rhine with a bunch of other people who’re as excited as you are…here are a few options you could explore. Source: Spike Art magazine 1. Accompanied swimming in the Rhine Before you dip in, please make sure that you follow the golden rules while swimming to ensure your safety. Swimming in the Rhine | All you need to know | My Swiss Story 10 Golden Rules to follow while Swimming in the Rhine: The big one everyone is eager to do once (and with good reason) is the Glacier Express, which crosses over the Furka, Oberalp and Bernina passes on the eight-hour ride between Zermatt and St Moritz in Graubünden’s Upper Engadin. Riveting views of meadows, forests, fast-flowing turquoise rivers, canyons, castles, big-shouldered mountains and glaciers keep you glued to the window. The entire journey is a remarkable feat of 1930s engineering, but special mention goes to the Landwasser viaduct – the gravity-defying six-arched bridge that leaps between Tiefencastel and Filisur, and the Oberalp Pass (2033m/6670ft), harnessing the true wilderness of the Swiss Alps.

Where can you get the Wickelfisch swim bag?

Basel’s most famous son is tennis great Roger Federer, whose image is never far from sight, including adorning the newly launched “Federer Express” tram.

Make sure that you feel really comfortable in water, even at places where you cannot reach the bottom with your feet. Planning tip : Lucerne makes an appealing base for exploring the lake, with its Old Town, medieval wooden bridge and promenade strung along the lakeshore. 6. Take the Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch The temperature here in Basel is rising up these days, so if you’re new to Basel or just want a guide on how you can swim in the Rhine to beat the heat (or maybe just for sun) then read on. In this article we break down all the steps to ace that perfect day out – Swimming in the Rhine edition. That’s right, this dry bag is designed to float in the water, ensuring you can bring it along without fear of losing your gear to the bottom of the ocean. That means, you can keep your phone, camera, wallet, and other valuables within reach at all times, so you never have to worry about losing them like you normally do when enjoying a swim in a crowded beach or lake.

The Rhine bathing houses

I’ve always associated Switzerland with winter travel or suits on business trips but as soon as the temperature allows, Basel is all about bathing, barbecues and buvettes. In this city centre a swimsuit is the typical summer outfit.

The photo of Basel Fasnacht looks to have actually been taken at Liestal, a town some kilometers away. Those fire brooms are part of that town’s unique and rather harrowing celebration, but they have nothing to do with Basel’s own Fasnacht, which is renowned in its own right. At the point where Switzerland, Germany and France converge in the north, Basel dives into creative waters when it comes to avant-garde art and architecture, with a raft of galleries right up there with Europe’s best. But this city also likes to let its mind drift. The Sports Department of Basel-Stadt organizes an accompanied swim in the Rhine every Tuesday during the summer months of July and August. What I like about this is the fact that you’re accompanied by trained guards and it is a recurring event. You can find all the info here. Image Source: https://slrg-basel.ch/basler-rheinschwimmen/ 2. The Basel Rhine Swim The Münsterplatz holds around 40 stalls set out in a larger area so it’s easier to navigate through. You can also enjoy the amazing sights of the Rhine River and the Gothic Basel Minster. The smallest Basel Christmas Market Is the Claraplatz in Kleinbasel. However, it’s worthwhile visiting. Final Words on Basel Switzerland To be honest, when Air Canada hosted its famed almost-annual travel agent “Race” early this fall, the airline could have sent participants by camel train to Timbuktu and they would have been thrilled, such was the enthusiasm by most for their first trip since the pandemic began. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and instead, Air Canada selected beautiful, bountiful Basel, Switzerland, for its gala event. The Swim City exhibition at the Swiss Architecture Museum until 29 September is a celebration of bathing culture in cities across the world and a look at how swimming in cities could look in the future. Exhibits include the Thames Bath: a floating river pool on the river in central London and +POOL – a development that would allow New Yorkers to swim in the Hudson River. The world’s largest contemporary art fair has been held since 1970 in the city but has expanded over the years to include annual stagings in Miami Beach (since 2022) and Hong Kong (2013), garnering a global reputation for the prestigious forum. Designed to spotlight the top artists of the time and provide a platform for them to sell their works, which can range from paintings to digital art and full-fledged installations, the fair is the city’s signature event and the foundation of Basel’s reputation as a city of art and cultural capital in Europe. At this year’s event in September, 33 countries were represented in 272 galleries; next year, the fair is scheduled for June 16 to 19. Like I said earlier as well, it’s very important to get your entry and exit points right. Pre-decide the spot from where you’d b e exiting the river again. You have to plan this, as it takes some time to get all the way to the side. No country nails rail travel like the Swiss, where little red trains (polished and perfectly on time) chug from valley to peak with ease, leaving you to swoon over the Alpine scenery from the comfort of your panoramic carriage. Evoking a golden age of travel, Switzerland’s train journeys are hands down some of the world’s finest.
