About this deal

Particularly welcome is how well the sound swells forward and out from the built-in soundbar. This provides far more impact and detail than the more ‘swallowed’ effect you typically get with TVs that house all their speakers behind their screens. Calling in Onkyo to help out the 65C815K’s sound quality results in an impressive audio performance for such an affordable TV. The intense colours are at their best with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ sources. The extra scene-by-scene picture information these two formats provide appears to help the set rein in its most aggressive colour instincts to deliver punchy but also mostly believable and balanced tones. So much so that pictures actually look much more dynamic and bold than the good (for this price level) peak measured brightness of around 540 nits would lead you to expect. Perhaps as a result of TCL’s efforts to keep the clouding so faint and vague, though, it can sometimes spread further away from the edges of a particularly bright object than we might have anticipated from a TV that has 576 dimming zones at its disposal. Having said that, the resulting sometimes slightly misty-looking pictures are far less likely to distract you than smaller but brighter and more defined areas of blooming would. Information about the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical side of the screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and of higher quality image.

TVs are getting an increasingly higher brightness and color range to display HDR content as strongly as possible. The C835 improves the performance of the C825 one more step. We see a significant step forward, especially in terms of clarity. On a 10% window it achieves 1,313 nits (against just under 1,000 nits on the C825) and on a completely white screen it achieves 638 nits (540 nits on the C825). It is striking that on a 25% window it even goes up to almost 1,600 nits. The problem is that the set’s edge-based lighting system just can’t control its light locally enough, with the result that whenever you’re watching a dark scene, especially an HDR dark scene, some supposedly dark areas look lighter than others, even though they shouldn’t. Some of these ‘cloudy’ areas are both central to the picture, and quite large. So there’s no ignoring them. What makes this TV stand out is the quality of its picture processing and delivery from first the Mini LED zones that create the light, then the quantum dot field that converts the blue light to white, through a new type of VA LCD panel for TCL that allows a wide viewing angle, and finally an antireflection coating that assists performance in a lit room. The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring.

As you make your way up TCL’s lines, TCL TVs will offer HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, gaming-focused features like ALLM and VRR, and even QLED panels. The 6-Series will even offer up Mini-LED support and 8K support, too. Unsurprisingly, the more features you want, the more money you’ll be spending. The color range of the quantum dots is equally impressive. The C835 achieves 93% P3 and 70% REc.2020. This equals the performance of an OLED, but combines it with a lot more brightness. Colors and light are therefore the strong side of this device, the images have an enormous intensity. Again, brightness alone doesn’t guarantee picture quality. In conjunction, though, with the C845K’s high dimming zone count and the fact that it uses Quantum Dots to deliver high-volume colours capable of capitalising on all that claimed brightness (TCL claims coverage of 97 per cent of the digital cinema DCI-P3 spectrum), we can’t help but at least hope that the 65C845K is going to do something pretty groundbreaking for its price point. On top of QLED panels, the 5-Series also gets HDR10+ and Dolby Vision as well as Dolby Atmos support for all the spatial audio fans. For gamers, the 5-Series adds in VRR and ALLM support, too, though it’ll only do 4K/60Hz. All told, the 5-Series upgrades image quality, audio, and gaming performance in key areas over the 4-Series. We found little need for color adjustment, but kept an eye on the motion settings, which allow control of blur and judder reduction on scales of 0 to 10. The upper settings of these introduced the excessively clean ‘video’ look where you’re seeing more interpolated frames than real ones. But the lowest settings, as selected automatically in ‘Movie’ mode, produced notable judder over long panning shots, or where cinematography was less than perfect. A quite high 6 or 7 for both settings was a compromise across material, with the Clear LED Motion toggle also activated, as this seemed to minimize any pasty video effect and deliver the most accurate color palette.

Across the US and the UK, TCL TVs are serious competitors in the budget TV space – especially during peak shopping periods. Then, these already competitive TVs can be discounted massively. You’ll often find TCL TVs with competitive features and specs sold at some of the lowest prices around. Approximate width of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the width is calculated from the diagonal and the aspect ratio. I could have gone for the C2 or the G2, but not worth it for me just for a little bit more brightness compared to my own Sony LED TV. And then having to baby the thing too, even though burn in risk is lessened these days compared to older models.

The subwoofer, meanwhile, eagerly underpins everything with far deeper bass than you get with most TVs, while only occasionally breaking down into mild distortions with the most extreme movie bass lines. The percentage of the approximate area, taken by the active part of the screen, to the total front area. ALLM allows the video game console or PC graphics card to switch automatically the TV into game mode for a super fast TV game input lag below 6 ms ** This fact does bring us quite early on to the C845K’s biggest picture weakness, though. Namely, a slightly cloudy look that can sometimes appear with shots and scenes that contain a bold mixture of very bright and very dark content, as the local light controls wrestle with achieving the best balance of local contrast and HDR brightness. Information of the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease of the display size and the increase of its resolution, the pixel density increases.
