About this deal

Appropriately, Pushead's "The Wave" is featured on the cover of this compilation as it was the release of this CD that enabled the Misfits to bid farewell to their contractual obligations to Roadrunner records. The unmistakably Pus'ed out ghouls waved a fiendish goodbye to label executives as the band's long requested termination of their recording contract was finally at hand. A limited edition blue vinyl 45 and promotional CD single were issued for the first single “Dig Up Her Bones”. not long after that, i found a 12" bootleg of "Beware" and even for a raw needle-drop from a source with notable surface noise, it totally blew away any other versions of those songs i ever heard before. The 1997 live version of Monster Mash (from the B-side of the glow in the dark vinyl single) was provided for completists, but Roadrunner A&R chose not to include it on the comp, using only the A-side studio version from the 1999 single instead.

TheMisfitsare often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre. Their fifth studio albumFamous Monstersis the second one without singer and founder Glenn Danzig. As the follow-up ofAmerican Psychothey’re focusing on the some aspects from the punk and metal music. The vocal parts are in the hands of Michale Graves and the songs are all well written. Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein brings out some of his famous guitar riffs, while Dr. Chud is hitting his drums. You can hear their punk roots, but also the heavier sounds of their bass and guitar melodies. The album has aged very well and is now available again on vinyl.

News + Headlines

The music video for “American Psycho” included the instrumental intro “Abominable Dr. Phibes” and brought Basil Gogos’ cover art to life. The video had its world premiere at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention in New York City. The screening was followed by a Q&A (hosted by Fangoria editor-in-chief Tony Timpone) with the Misfits joined by cover artist Basil Gogos and Director John Cafiero. In it’s initial release on LP and cassette in 1985, 1,000 copies were pressed in colored vinyl (500 red vinyl LPs and 500 white vinyl LPs). Legend has it that as a result of not cleaning the stampers during the color switch in the pressing plant, a small percentage of the 1,000 colored vinyl LPs (rumored to be 16 pcs) include various shades of pink. The first CD release was issued in 1992 by Caroline Records as a limited edition Gold CD (estimated at 15,000 copies). Caroline had continually reissued the album in LP and cassette format since its debut.

The cover artwork by the late Mad Marc Rude depicts all four band members as ghouls amidst non-descript zombies and monsters. The band members are depicted with green eyes from left to right, Doyle, Jerry Only (front/center), Glenn Danzig and Robo.

Famous Monsters

Static Age was originally slated for release on CD in 1995 but delayed. Promo posters were printed advertising, “The Static Age is “Coming Halloween 1995”. A small percentage of these posters were given to the Misfits and the majority destroyed by Caroline Records. At the time, former frontman and Misfits co-founder Glenn Danzig informed the source reels for the album could not be found, refusing participation in the release of “Static Age” as well as the Misfits 4-disc “Box Set”.

Limited edition colored vinyl LPs were also released. In North America, the first LP pressing was a limited edition of 1,000 pcs on 100-gram solid blue vinyl. The second pressing on 100 gram PURPLE vinyl was also limited to 1,000 pcs. Both pressings are sold out and long out of print. Following the legal proceedings sparked by the “Legacy” album, fans would finally hear many classic-era Misfits recordings as they were originally intended, starting with the long awaited release of the legendary “Static Age” album in 1996.

Fiend Facts: American Psycho was the first album featuring new material from the Misfits in over a decade and followed Jerry Only’s efforts to resurrect the band in 1995. The first LP pressing in ‘83 included approx. 1,000 colored vinyl LPs estimated at 100 green, 500 yellow, 200 purple and 200 clear vinyl (most with colored swirls).

For it’s debut release within the Misfits box set, “Static Age” was re-mastered using a cassette layoff of the final mix from 1978. The rare cassette had been kept in a safe deposit box at a Lodi, NJ bank for years by original Misfits guitarist Franché Coma. Had it not been for Frank (aka Franché) providing that source, the album may have never seen the light of day. The tape was in great shape, having been stored in a temperature-controlled environment for all those years. Dig Up Her Bones” marked the first official music video ever from the legendary Misfits and debuted on MTV’s 120 minutes. The video repeated on MTV several times in addition to being featured on the Sci-Fi channel. The original Misfits broke up in October 1983, having released several 7" singles and 12" records, all of which were DIY limited-edition and most of which were hand-assembled by the band, that have long been considered prime collectors' items. The bulk of the band's material was released on Glenn's Plan 9 label. The band's popularity grew exponentially following their split and their material and tapes of their live shows were heavily bootlegged.
