There will be things in school with their name written on just for them like their peg, so it’s lovely for them to spot this.If you’d rather hear me chat through these ideas than read the article below then here is a video of me talking through all things starting school - WATCH HERE. We went with the MATHS chapter as it is full of so many games and is the most straight forward chapter to follow without reading the rest of the book! This is quite a hard skill to teach but in my opinion probably the most useful one to do if you prepare them no other way. A little magic cuddle button and visual reminder they are loved and connected to you even when you aren’t together. Getting your child ready to start school and then supporting them in their learning can feel overwhelming, can't it?

We either read his books TO him, or we read alternative pages with him, showing him how we sounded out words and then letting him try to copy. After years of working in sports broadcasting she quit her job to become a Teaching Assistant, which her colleagues at the time found baffling!Five-minute fun activities and games to help with letters, numbers and everything in between - the ultimate handbook to help support your child through Early Years, Reception and Key Stage 1, from bestselling author and social media superstar Daisy Upton AKA Five Minute Mum. Five minutes here and there, with fun and games together, it doesn't have to just be homework - it becomes quality family time. And don’t forget if you’re going on holiday and need ideas for long journeys, to keep kids entertained in restaurants or ideas on what to pack then my book ON THE GO has it ALLLL! These games are roughly for ages 5-7 and are designed to make homework more fun or to encourage reading, writing and maths at home in an easy way, that doesn’t feel like a chore.

Now when we played these games, (regularly, for five minutes and whenever he WANTED to, stopping if he got frustrated or bored), it seemed like we were still getting nowhere. The book band reminded the same, he still often sounded out ‘m-a-n’ and said “biscuit”, we still reached for the bottle of wine after ‘reading’ with him! Like I said before, chatting regularly about school is useful and mentioning that they can always ask a grown up for support or help with something is a very useful regular reminder.

So if you too have small children in your care to entertain and five minute set ups sound good to you, then you’re in the right place.
