It says a lot. There are a lot of questions raised about whether venture capital driven, big tech, startup companies should be the ones who are confronting public health issues. It says a lot about our society. It says a lot about late stage capitalism. But let’s be clear, we also live in a time where in our society, extraordinary advances are being made in public health in areas, for instance, cancer research. I'll admit that maybe the reason I didn't like this documentary could be because I'm not the target audience but I'm sure it didn't need to be 4 episodes long and a 90 minute doc would've been much more engaging. I think it's an important narrative to tell but the documentary didn't inform me of anything new or give me any new perspectives so I felt a bit let down on that front.

It’s not vaporware, and it’s not filling a niche that didn’t need to be filled. Their mistakes weren’t in the design or even the need for such a product; Juul’s failure was both a failure of marketing and a failure of clinical research. It’ll be interesting to see how Cutler approaches this in the series’ other three episodes.

We hear about hate mail telling founders, “I hope you die”, and parents desperate to get their kids off vaping. We’re told by former students that employees turned up at schools to tell students not to vape in one breath, but insist they’re safe in the next. We’re told by former teenagers how easy and trendy vaping became. Our Take: Perhaps it’s because Bowen and Monsees refused to be interviewed, or it could just be their personalities, but Cutler doesn’t go out of his way to portray the founders of Juul as your typical Silicon Valley techbros. Sure, they still adhere to the “move fast and break things” approach their fellow ’00s-era tech entrepreneurs followed, but it did seem like they had a sincere desire to help people stop smoking. In fact, they took pains to avoid getting investment from any of the Big Tobacco companies during the first phases of Ploom/Juul’s existence, and they used the companies’ own research into developing a heated tobacco nicotine delivery system as the basis for their invention. We would not suggest using CBD Eliquid in these cloud vapes as they tend to be higher in PG and more therefore runnier. This means they are likely to pose leaking issue. No one wants a leaky cloud vape.

There are multiple interviews with people associated with Juul, including co-founder Adam. We hear from an enthusiastic recruiter for Juul, an anonymous engineer, and investors — I enjoyed that they kept the same pool of interviewees small. There are swanky behind-the-scenes shots of the interviews, showing all the expensive-looking equipment. This is an interesting take — mirroring the efforts it took behind the scenes to get this company up and running. Nowadays, vape mods have a broad range of electronic features and power limits. Some are more advanced and can be adjustable in watts (variable wattage mods) or even controlled in temperature (temperature control mods); others have no adjustability and require no technological understanding from the user. Just like with vape mods, there’s a lot of variation to atomizers. The key thing to remember is that they need to be compatible with the vape mod. Not all will physically fit on all vape mods, and some aren’t appropriate due to their coil resistance and the power they may require to function properly. What Cutler makes sure to emphasize in the first episode is that, despite the fact that Juul and other e-cigs eliminate a lot of what regular cigarettes put into people’s lungs, it’s still a delivery system for a highly-addictive drug. He doesn’t belabor the point, but he uses that point to foreshadow the difficulties the company faces later on, when their marketing targets a young demographic that ends up alarming both parents and the FDA.
