About this deal

Pink Means Feminine: Daffinee wears a pink dress and is girly, but while Pinky has pink hair she openly states to disliking the color. I never thought a surreal comic about gay puppygirls in love and in art school (and, after their tragic suicides, in hell) would ever make me cry, but here we are. Pinky, the performance artist of the relationship, literally gives her life to art and Pepper (the painter) follows soon after. There’s something so brilliant about a depiction of hell that leans into the worst of Catholic guilt so as to thoroughly subvert it: a hell where queer artists, through vivacious masochism and dedication to each other, thrive. Atoms says so much with so little, and has created something that could help anyone who gives their life to love and art flourish.” Running Gag: Mr. Guinea Pig playing the trumpet whenever the Great Big Fancy Word of the day is mentioned. Title Theme Tune: Pinky's got a story she wants to share with you... Pinky Dinky Doo. Never at a loss for words she pulls out of the blue... Pinky Dinky Doo.

This is a short read about two artists who love each other and are in a deeply unhealthy relationship. I do want to put some emphasis on that first thing, as it's the only other content warning I'd give this comic that it itself doesn't cover at the very beginning: Pinky and Pepper are really not good for each other. I know some people can't stomach reading about toxic relationships - and I don't like to use that term casually, but it applies here - so I'm just putting that forward. The puppets also appeared on TV in the United States on a number of episodes of The Ed Sullivan Show: 532 (14 September 1958), 548 (4 January 1959), 573 (5 July 1959), 740 (10 March 1963), 780 (23 February 1964, where they shared the bill with the Beatles and Morecambe and Wise) and 908 (26 February 1967). Medium Blending: The show uses a mix of 2D animation and real-life images, making it look like a collage, not unlike another show that aired on the same network in the U.K.

They had their own fictional TV station "PPC TV" (a play on "BBC"). They also performed comedy sketches usually with a human foil (similar to Basil Brush). Actor John Slater worked with them as a straight man for many years, enduring soakings from water pistols and similar pranks. Other human companions included Roger Moffat, Jimmy Thompson, Bryan Burdon and Fred Emney. A) There's a need for queer solidarity especially in danger or isolation for safety and survival, despite any differences or disagreements. These can be overcame and communities can mutually heal and grow together when they find a place to breathe. Lovable Alpha Bitch: Daffinee can be spoiled and rude at times, but she's mostly kind to her friends (especially in the second season). although there are also other ways of approaching the book. while i read it in the context of what i consider an epidemic of lgbt suicides, pinky and pepper's time in hell is also about showing them discussing and working through the communication mismatches that existed in their particular relationship, rather than necessarily being a universal message about queerness. there are also other ideas the comic explores, for instance of religion and guilt, complicated kink relationships, and the role of art and art school amongst other things. i feel like this is a book that certainly rewards multiple rereadings. about half way through the book is the most obvious turning point - pinky's death. tbh this hit me with a force i wasn't expecting, given that it happening is hardly a surprise being right in the blurb. i think i thought pinky going to hell would be some kind of metaphor. but no. pinky is clearly literally dead.

Pinky & Pepper Forever is a dark comedy about two teen puppy girls, determined to stay together through high school, death, and hell itself.” In each episode, there is also a "Great Big Fancy Word", which varies with each episode, but when somebody is about to say the word, Mr. Guinea Pig will blow a trumpet and then the character says the word.Failed Attempt at Scaring: In one episode, Tyler dresses as a banana for Halloween and wants to be scary, but everyone just finds him cute. A guy dressed as a vampire tells him to make a "scary noise", so he shouts, "Bleeeeyy!" but it doesn't work. I had a lot of fun reading this! The art is super charming - I'm a big fan of the colored pencil look, and the various multimedia pieces with it added a lot to it. I found myself giving this a few rereads to look over details in the panels and found a lot of meaning even in just the imagery used.

Pinky and Tyler sing "We're Going To The Story Box" as they dance over to the Story Box before Pinky starts the story of the day.

Pinky Dinky Doo provides examples of:

Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Averted with Bobby, who is in a wheelchair but is treated as an equal. in mainstream media, if there's queer characters in a story one of them is going to die. pinky and pepper feels like the intervention into this narrative i didn't even know i needed.
