About this deal

Find out the prices of different types of biscuits. Use these for your own statistics / data handling activities or to create some word problems. Make a list of words that could be used to describe Horace’s lump of pastry when he was first given it and after it has been rolled over the floor and furniture. Make a timeline showing the main events of the story and the approximate times that they might have taken place. Measure the flour (400g) into a small bowl. If your child is able to, get them to help measure the salt ( ½ tsp) and bicarbonate of soda (2 ½ tsp) into the flour. Add these into your large mixing bowl. Turn the mixer down to a slower speed and get your child to help you measure the vanilla extract (1/2 tsp) into the bowl. Let them use the spoon on their own if they are able to (my 3 year old can just about do this), or help them and steady their hand while you pour if you need to (my 1.5 year old can help do it this way). Add the remaining ingredients

Bake the biscuits in the oven for 12-15 minutes. They’re ready when they are brown and a little crispy to touch. Get your child to measure the butter (225g) and sugar (200g demerara, 150g caster) out and then add to a mixing bowl or freestanding mixer. If the butter isn’t already soft, pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so, just to make it easier to mix. Print off the poster template so that your child can fill the poster with drawings of the performing biscuits at Biscuit bear’s circus. Investigate reversible and irreversible changes. Is the process of cooking biscuits reversible or irreversible? Why? Once your child has heard the story a few times they will be able to tell it to you, in their own words, using the illustrations to help them. Watch the storyTypically with these things, we had nothing planned the weekend we got him and the weather wasn’t great so we had to think a little creatively to have something to put in his diary. We love baking so that seemed like an obvious choice but I thought we should make it a little bit interesting and try to make biscuits that resembled our very own Everywhere Bear. At the start of the story, Horace is desperate to eat the biscuit bear. Write a persuasive letter to his mum asking her to allow him to eat the biscuit. While everything is mixing, chop up the chocolate into small pieces. Get your toddler to add it in to your dough mixture and give it one last mix so that everything is nicely combined. Red Fox Age 3-7 When Horace makes a biscuit bear with his Mum, it looks delicious and he can’t wait to eat it. However his mum makes him wait, and in any case, it turns out the biscuit bear has other ideas about his future! This is a highly inventive story with lots to talk about in the detailed illustrations.

Some of the illustrations show the reader how to brush their teeth. Can you create a set of instructions to teach others how to brush their teeth correctly? You could decorate with currants for eyes, or add lots of decoration just like biscuit bear does. Be a circus performer Mix everything together until you have a smooth dough. If you need to, use a spatula to scrape the mixture down from the sides of the bowl. Roll pieces of dough into round balls to form the bears’ heads. Get your kids to help you roll two smaller balls and attach them to your bear heads to form the ears. Place on your baking tray, leaving space between them for spreading. We made some with noses and some without to see whether they worked better with biscuit noses or iced ones – I think it worked either way.
