About this deal

Babette Cole caused something of a stir when she published Mummy Laid an Egg: it was described by The Bookseller as: "Funny, factual and frank.

She produced animated storyboards for the BBC and illustrated numerous greetings cards and books by other authors as well as her own. The drawings are funny and the text provides a basic introduction to some of the first changes that kids will start to notice, such as the "hair in funny places". Hormone"" and their dog, a vile little trio who ""live inside you"" and ""mix the potions that turn children into adults.Hormone that plays havoc with the physical and emotional states of girls and boys between, roughly, eight to eighteen years. It has been umpteen years since I read this book, and unless they have issued a new edition since then with better illustrations, I would have to say I didn't like it. The trouble with Gran is that, beneath her grandmotherly exterior, she's an alienand a rather lively, headstrong one at that. Puberty can be daunting for children and the imagery of evil little monsters cooking up batches of chemicals entitled "Essence of Pube", ready to be pumped around the body, will hardly put children at ease. This made it grow big and small whenever it wanted"") and nocturnal emissions (""some sticky stuff actually came out"").

Sperm is described as "some sticky stuff" menstruation is described as "a tiny bit of blood in her knickers" and pubic hair is referred to as hair in "funny" places. My 10-year-old step-daughter was equal parts horrified and amused for the same reasons, especially as we've reached the point where we can maturely and comfortable discuss puberty in our house without any hangups (on EITHER side) or sugar-coating.The text, which takes the form of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear, is ingenious and funny. Praise for Boying Up: "A matter-of-fact mirror that reflects reality and respect, not bewildered embarrassment. Typical of Cole's no-holds-barred approach to bodily issues, over the course of the book she touches briefly on everything from menstruation to acne, body odour, and even erections. In both text and art, Cole's characteristic wacky humor sparks this fable about a contemporary princess who ``enjoyed being a Ms.

In Hair in Funny Places Cole hits home again in a canny little volume which takes a sideways glance at what happens to the body when it is hit by puberty. Puberty can seem dreadful or traumatic to children, and I think the wacky style slights or ridicules the intended reader. With her irresistible illustrations and wonderfully funny text, who better to guide us through all things hairy than the brilliant Babette Cole. The watercolors are equally candid, and the gleeful depictions of naked bodies may raise adults' eyebrows but children will laugh out loud.It is funny, educational and does a lot for teaching children about their bodies, puberty and just a hint about sex. Just made me laugh really, but quite informative I suppose; in the most straight talking way I've ever seen in a children's book.

When parents hear their children laughing, the children can say they're reading and learning at the same time. Puberty being a particularly unsettling time, Babette Cole has made this the subject of the fifth title in her bestselling series of ‘family dilemmas’.This hilarious, ingenious book is formed of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear about 'Mr and Mrs Hormone' who 'live inside you' and 'mix the potions that turn children into adults'. It can be used to have or start conversations with kids about growth and changes ( physical and emotional), body positivity , consent and safety, reproduction.
