About this deal

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition style bourbon is easily my favorite expression of the Whiskey Row Series. I’ve been a fan of Old Forester Signature, and 1920 Prohibition Style bourbon is has a similar flavor profile but much stronger. If I had one minor gripe, it would be that this expression likely started as normal barrels of Old Forester distillate, with a barrel entry proof of 125. If Brown-Forman really wanted to make an interesting bourbon, barreling some bourbon at 100 proof for a future release would be a more accurate reflection of a prohibition style whiskey.

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style - Ratings and reviews

Interesting nose, the alcohol is noticeable, but more through intense heat in the nose than through the typical smell of ethanol, beautiful peanut dipped in toffee comes first, manuka honey, bitter orange, vanilla, cinnamon, hint of anise, grapefruit, but the subtle ostensible peanut is the most exciting You are responsible for all activities through your account. Moist, dark chocolate cake with cloves and oak mix with a flourish of vanilla on the nose. The taste holds onto the spice and amps it into Christmas spice territory with a focus on woody cinnamon next to worn leather and buttery toffee. A dry floral note arrives late with a burst of orange that leans creamy (almost like a sherbert) comingling with all that vanilla and toffee.Every year, Old Forester releases their most anticipated whisky, Birthday Bourbon. This year’s release was a 12-year-old blend created from 119 barrels of the good stuff. Belle Meade doesn’t get as much attention as so many whiskey brands out there, but the distillery is producing incredible juice. I’m partial to the sherry barrel expression because I love spirits with nutty, umami notes.” - Kat Odell, author of Day Drinking . This line of bourbon is a stone-cold classic. Their 100-proof expression is made in the same way as their 86 proof. The key difference is after these barrels are blended, they’re barely touched with water, keeping the proof very hearty.

This opens with a rush of fresh wildflowers next to bold citrus notes, especially grapefruit and orange oils with a dash of lemon zest in the mix. The taste takes that lemon and layers it into a very vanilla and butter-forward shortbread with a dusting of raw sugar that leads towards an eggnog spice mix. That spiciness drives the finish as a hint of cherry and lemon mingle on the warm and fairly long end. During this time, all whisky had to be bottled at 100 proof. With this entry proof, the angel’s share (evaporation in the barrel during aging) created a 115 proof whiskey after maturation. Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style represents the same flavor profile this bourbon had nearly 100 years ago. When I reviewed Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Knob Creek Single Barrel. Both are nearly cask strength bourbons from historic distillers, Knob Creek from Jim Beam and Old Forester from Brown Forman, that cater to bourbon lovers. Knob Creek Single Barrel is one of my longtime personal favorites and one of the best “values” on the market, while Old Forester 1920 is a newer bourbon from the highly regarded Whiskey Row series, aimed at recreating bourbons from various periods. In this case, the 1920 recreates their bourbons made during Prohibition. Both bottles have been open for over 2 months and I let each glass rest for 20 minutes, so let’s get to the Knob Creek Single Barrel vs Old Forester 1920 comparison. Whiskybase B.V. Blantons used to be my sipper but Four Roses Single Barrel and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are my current favorites based on their smooth velvety feel. This is an excellent change of pace with a lot of character. This is a perfectly suitable entry-point whisky. It’s great for mixing but needs a fair bit of ice to work as a sipper. And that’s why we’re starting this ranking with it. Old Forestes knows this is a mixing bourbon, so let’s treat it like that. 13. Old Forester Rye Whisky Brown-Forman
