About this deal

No camping trip is truly complete until you’ve spent a long evening chilling with your friends around the campfire. Good banter, cold beers and sizzling steaks (or roasting marshmallows) under a starry sky – it’s a magical experience. Fancy it? Then you need a portable fire pit. If you have a Trangia type burner, you will want to have access to the flame control ring while cooking. While setting up the Bushbox Ultralight, place the grill plate in the bottom slot. This should allow you to access and flame controller through the side piece with the fuel feed hole. Reduce your carbon footprint and fuel costs by using organic resources like twigs, leaves, pine cones, wood shavings, feathers, etc. Despite our first impression that these types of stoves could be very versatile, after a bit of thought and testing we realized they are not versatile when it counts. Yes, you can burn wood, other organic material, Trangia, or Esbit in it — but with all of these fuels there is no flame control. Not to mention Esbit smells terrible and will ruin your wilderness experience. Depending solely on gathering wood and organic materials presents its own set of problems. We spent a lot of time in the Sierra Nevada this summer where there is a serious drought and a complete fire ban — so we were unable to bring the Bushbox with us on any trips. Even if there was not a drought, many places have permanent fire bans and bans on collecting wood in alpine areas because it disturbs this fragile environment. If you are in a place like the Pacific Northwest where there is a lot of precipitation, it could be difficult to find dry materials from day to day to light your stove with.

We’re not going to get into firebox cooking here, but there is a very important aspect of firebox cooking that really applies to the Bushbox Ultralight: allowing the stove to cool. Once you are finished cooking, either let the wood burn out by itself, or, using some sort of tongs or hot pad, shake or dump out the wood in a safe place where it can burn out on it’s own. Overall, I was very impressed by this little stove. If you're looking for something that is very compact but still want to use biomass that you can find in your surroundings and not carry solid alcohol, then this is your choice away from an Ezbit or Trangia.I mean these are nice choices but less versatile. Overnight delivery is not available for Zones C & D Highlands and Islands, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Guernsey and Jersey, Isle of Scilly.

Includes firepit, grill and ferrocerium rod / minimalist design / stainless steel / foldable and rollable grill / built-in windshield / airflow / dimensions: 29x28cm grill

Here are a few things that can make your experience with the Bushbox Ultralight much more enjoyable and the stove more versatile. Optional Stove Parts More than anything else, this is why my Bushbox Ultralight stove would be a primary item I would choose for a bugout bag for the zombie apocalypse.Let the stove cool down by itself. Trying to hasten that process by pouring cold water on a hot stove can severely warp it and weaken the metal. Once the embers have either been removed or have burned themselves out, the Bushbox Ultralight will usually cool down to the point you can touch in a minute or two. Make Sure it is Legal

A fire pit is an open, lidless container in which a fire can be lit using wood or charcoal. Or, to put it another way, a fire pit is a no-nonsense version of a barbecue, with an extra touch of rugged, outdoorsy appeal. You can cook over a fire pit, or you can simply light it for the warmth. The triangular design makes it fairly stable even with a larger pot. The size though is perfect for a camping personal pot as you can see from the video. I chose wood as a fuel because it is the hardest to use on this but it proved pretty easy even with a bit of wind (as you can hear from the beginning of the video). You can choose to use either the top piece or the dents to put your pot on, depending on the size. I needed very little fuel to boil a cup of water and using little biomass is the main purpose of these little stoves. Also add the ashtray collector piece and it becomes isolated from the ground and therefore safer to use everywhere. Now if you want more power, I suggest you consider the Bushbox XL also from this maker. Like this one, it has a very well thought and sturdy design and you can't go wrong. This model is ultra lightweight, the other one not so but a real workhorse. The stove is definitely stainless as there is no rust whatsoever, but mine has lost all its silvery shine. I think it’s still there beneath the burned on tar and grease residue, but I don’t mind the tarnished look. After all, that’s part of the appeal of cooking with a firebox stove. Adapting to Different Kitchen Setups One huge gray area with firebox stoves is whether or not they are considered an “open fire” or not. While this hardly matters in a place where you can have a campfire, in many parks and public lands, open fires are either restricted or outright prohibited. You can use rubbing alcohol (91% denatured alcohol) from any drug store or Heet (or similar) fuel stabilizers that can be found at gas stations and auto parts stores. There are some tiny tab holders that hold the trivet in place that I keep thinking will break off or bend at some point, but they never do. After a few years of monthly use, my Bushbox Ultralight still assembles and disassembles perfectly with no problems. The BushBox XL Combination Kit weighs in at just over 800g, so it’s not the lightest, but it’s made from solid materials, which mean your food is in safe hands on top of it. For its size it is ultra portable, folding down to thinner than 1 cm, inside its own special carrying case.
