What sets these songs apart from Opeth's other soft songs (songs like "Benighted" or "Hours of Wealth") is that these songs are soft, but they're not slow. They feature a more upbeat tempo with a faster rhythm, and they do not have a reliance on the mellotron or keyboards.

Archived from the original on 5 February 2008 . Retrieved 12 January 2008. Opeth is a group that suffers from one major problem. A majority of the time that they try to make slow songs, they result in boredom. I'm a huge fan when they can find a balance between both brutality and tranquility, but sadly, this album did not find a happy medium. It's obvious that the band has plenty of talent; it's just that it's often wasted on trying to be "artistic" with slower songs. That I did when we recorded the new album. Mikael [Åkerfeldt, singer/guitarist] and I restrung all the guitars before we sent them over to the UK. Since then, I haven’t done it, but that was quite recent. I think there were at least 12 – and a bunch of acoustics as well. We use a regular PRS Angelus quite a lot while we’re recording. We also like to overdub with a Taylor Nashville-tuned guitar, so we get that sort of separated 12-string sound.” 7. New drummer Martin Axenrot will pleasantly surprise many an Opeth fan with his performance here. Not only does he play with admirable restraint on most of the album, but he also proves how capable a drummer is on "The Lotus Eater", which is another sound experiment for the band. The drumming on this dissonant tune is stupifyingly good, OPETH: 'In Live Concert At The Royal Albert Hall' DVD First-Week Sales Revealed". www.blabbermouth.net. October 2010 . But there was no concept between the songs. It’s based on what happened in my life during the past few years. I’m more of a sensitive person and protective person (since he became a dad). It doesn’t take much to be disgusted with your surroundings, especially when you have kids. So, what does this album amount to in the end? Basically, a very boring hour of your time. The album has some good growls from Mikael, some enjoyable guitar and drum work, a keyboard solo that was awesome, and a slow song that wasn't half bad. Unfortunately, a majority of the music played here is slow, tedious, and sleep-inducing. Mikael. "Opeth - Biography: Chapter III". Opeth.com. Archived from the original on 28 August 2008 . OPETH: 'The Roundhouse Tapes' First-Week Sales Revealed". www.blabbermouth.net. 28 November 2007 . Retrieved 17 July 2014. Lotus Eater -> In my opinion the best song of the album. The song starts with blastpit and clean progressive vocals on it! The brutal parts are also there. As akerfeldt said thissong is what opeth is today. I have drunk nothing but milk ( beer), milk ( beer), milk tonight, so I'm extremely sober ( drunk), sober ( drunk), sober now. To be totally honest with you, I have always ( never), always ( never), always loved Opeth and progressive death metal in general and I have listened to Watershed at least two dozen ( three), two dozen ( three), two dozen times now. [44] Coil -> unexpected start of the disc, Short but beautiful with great acoustic guitars and well worked vocals. The cover is ready. Travis Smith has done it. And as usual he sent me something just thrown together and...there it is! It looks typical Opeth I guess. I love it and it ties in with the lyrics and music really well. Dark stuff....of course! But Opeth is even a bigger influence because I listen to a lot of Opeth myself and I think it's a very interesting band. Fame can be both boon and bane. And in the recent past, it has served as the latter to a good majority of metal bands that all of a sudden want to cash in on their success. And for a band like Opeth, success could have easily gotten to their heads. So did they fall prey to it?
