About this deal

What can I now say at the end of my slider research? Well, the first thing is that there are rigs and set-ups out there that are completely idiot-proof. Try the Belgian tube set-up... you'll never seriously tangle a rig again. Then there's scope to experiment with the more supple Italian style rigs, even with smaller English style wagglers. This was a revelation to me and something I will endeavour to try again, not just when bream are the quarry, but when roach, or even carp become the target species. Try looking on the web for slider floats across Europe. If I had based this article simply on the floats available in the UK, this would have become a fairly restricted article.

I began swapping rods over and comparing how both systems coped with the drift and wind and came to these conclusions:Small skimmers, on the other hand, are notoriously difficult to catch and you simply must have everything set correctly to see and hit the bites. That often means having just a couple of inches of line on the bottom if conditions allow. Done right you’ll see the bites from both these shy-biting skimmers and bigger bream without trouble. Further top-ups are done according to bites and could be just one ball or more typically two or three balls at intervals. When bites slow that’s obviously the signal to feed. You might not catch instantly either, especially if it’s bigger bream you are targeting. Just have faith and these big fish will normally turn up at some stage on the session.

In the mix I will add casters, dead maggots, maybe smaller dead pinkies and finely chopped worms; all good skimmer fodder. On an international event I would probably add joker to the mix, too. If you have problems getting hold of Michael's special bullets, then try sourcing one of these pellet waggler leads and smoothing off the stems to create exactly the same effect. This is a difficult lake at the best of times as the water is crystal clear with heavy weed growth in bands, usually 15 – 20 metres from the bank, with deeper water beyond. Depths vary from 3.5 to about 4.5 metres at casting range. Target fish were roach, bleak, with the odd rogue bream and some elusive tench. I made two other modifications to Pierre Francois' original concept by allowing the tubing to sit on two Drennan float stops, rather than let it rest on shot. This allows me to easily lift and adjust the height of the tubing, depending on whether I want a more sensitive drop. It also stops floats bouncing off shot and getting damaged (I have previously chipped a few floats on shot below the tubes). It must also be said that part of this problem has been created by not having silicone adaptors stiff enough to stop the float sagging over, a problem I've since resolved by using the float adaptors sold by Michael! You might still be afraid of slider fishing because of that weird ‘slider-knot thingy,’ and if you are unfamiliar with tying different knots you may be daunted by the prospect. Never fear, though, it is much easier than you think. Even for depths well under the length of the rod, I often slide the float the last couple of feet. It's much easier to cast 7 or 8' than 9 or 10'. The second modification is down to my son, Dave Jnr, who fine-tuned his floats by wrapping lead wire on the tubing, just to get each float settled perfectly.

One stop knot is usually fine, although I may very occasionally use two butted up to each other to ensure they don’t slip.I’ve found that when fishing in deep water winding in fish can result in A LOT of line twist, which is a pain in the bum, and will more often than not result in a tangle. A way to counter this is to use a swivel to attach to hooklength. The smallest Preston or Matrix swivel are roughly the same weight as a No. 8 shot, be attaching one of these to you mainline before the hooklength you drastically reduce the amount of line twist experienced on the retrieve.

Research. I spent a lot of time looking and searching for new floats and rigs to try out. This proved really exciting because I began to realise that the slider was no longer the simple 'English versus Italian style' contest. As Pierre Francois showed, other countries were developing their own slant on sliders, Michael Schlögl in Germany being a prime example, along with the some of the latest developments from Cralusso... like their new Zero slider attachment.

It's a tried and tested set-up that Drennan Team England have implemented and used for over decade. The rig itself is so simple; being as comfortable at catching bream at 45 metres, as catching roach and skimmers at 17 metres. All of my slider bulks are made up of three or four of these large Anchor shot. I never use any more than four shot, to avoid tangles, although very small ‘trimming shot’ to fine-tune things are acceptable. My main shot will typically be AAAs, SAs, SSGs or 2SSGs. I also taper them so that the largest shot are nearer the float. Ensure the shot are butted up tight against each other, as gaps can also lead to tangles. To achieve this you will need to wind the ‘float-stop device’ through the rod rings because you need it out of the way when you are casting. This ‘float-stop device’ is in fact a slider-knot and is the key component to slider fishing. Creating a slider knot. A picture paints a thousand words. You might find yourself on a flat-calm millpond fishing for skimmers… or a water with a strong tow where you need to slow the bait right down for instance. Or anything in between. Sensitivity needs to be balanced with presentation.
