A word about assembly: At first, it seems impossible to fit the spider legs into their appropriate sockets.

However, sometimes the manufacturer can run into production or licensing problems and occasionally items are cancelled either temporarily or permanently. Back when Gremlins 2 came out, I remember seeing the big mutant spider gremlin at the end, and saying, "I want a toy of that! When I got it out of the box and assembled I was gobsmacked by how good it is, so if you're thinking about getting one just do it; you won't regret it. I am glad that NECA is continuing to support it and their offerings are really getting better and better. The recent focus has been on the underappreciated second installment, but all things being equal, that movie provided much more diversity in terms of look and characterization for many of the “little green men.The jaw on mine seems a little loose, and looks best either closed or open a little, but there is variety there. The Spider Gremlin's abdomen has a complex color pattern, and the toy does not just recreate that, it also has paint for the leathery texture of the part! A couple of years ago, something like this was deemed impossible, and we got a sloppy Berserker Predator. The paint and sculpting on the figure is fantastic, and NECA has really done a fine job of bringing it to life.

Each leg is articulated at several points, with additional joints at the arms, one in the body and at the jaw (all monster toys should get moving jaws! The package is surprisingly small, considering what's inside, which is good for storage and shelf space. NECA Toys has been planning the release of this figure for quite a while, but honestly it never looked like it was going to happen. I am really having a hard time organizing my thoughts around this figure, so I am probably just going to let the pictures do most of the talking.

I cannot decide if the sculpt or the paint applications are more impressive, but both of them are at the top of the heap for any action figure I have gotten recently. But this Spider Gremlin, while certainly the best NECA Gremlins item ever produced, might be the best thing NECA has made, period.

NECA has really outdone themselves with this figure, and their sculptors and painters need to pat themselves on the back for the design work. Well, the fact remains that, no matter the timing, the brand new Spider Gremlinfrom NECA is a lock for a “best of the year” candidate, and it is most certainly a masterpiece.
