About this deal

The Olight Perun 2 is an innovative design in the headlamp market since it doubles up as a headlamp and flashlight all in one. While it's not a traditional headlamp, we felt that it was underrated as a multi-purpose light and deserved a place in this list, awarding it 4.5 stars in our Olight Perun 2 review. The Vont Spark has seven different lighting settings, activated by cycling through them. The red light is activated by holding the button down for three seconds, and again, cycling between low, strobe or SOS mode. Once the selection has been made and left on for an extended period, the headlamp will allow the user to turn it off with one touch, meaning you don't have to cycle through all of the modes just to power down. Continuous red lighting to preserve night vision without blinding those around you, and strobe to signal your location, especially in emergency situations

Three white lighting levels: MAX BURN TIME, STANDARD (better power/burn time balance), and MAX POWER I would have liked to have seen a setting for an even narrower, more focused, beam, but as is it is hard to fault the Actik Core too much. The bottom line is that it is incredibly bright, even on the lower settings, delivering plenty of light when and where you need it most. The hue is a somewhat harsh white and is my only real complaint, as it does not bring out contrast as well as the warmer hued lamps as Kogalla ( RTR Review ) and Ledlenser ( RTR Review ) recent lamps do.Conclusion: The new Actik Core is a winner, as it is exceptionally bright, light, comfortable, easy to charge, has good battery life and will not break the bank. The average headlamp features a range of lighting modes, including spot, flood, colored, and strobe lights. The default setting for most lamps is their powerful LED spot beam, which focuses the light at a distance rather than casting it wide around you (the max distance these can reach is listed in the "max beam" section of our comparison table). While not necessary in all circumstances, a long-distance beam can be helpful for looking far down a trail, trying to spot an anchor while rappelling, or even for extreme uses like caving. A proximity beam illuminates the area right in front of you Lighting performance with rechargeable CORE rechargeable battery Lighting performance as defined by the ANSI/PLATO FL 1 protocol We found that the electronic tilt function wasn't as effective as other manual options, but it does come with a useful battery indicator and will also automatically drop the light output down when it's running low on power to ensure you have enough to get you home. This is a super useful feature if you're planning to use it for long stargazing trips at night. With a red light for astro and four brightness settings, we would definitely recommend this headlamp if you like the silicone-based design. Petzl Actik Core 450: This is a reliable and durable headlamp with a choice of power options. If you don't mind using a Micro-USB cable to charge, there's nothing else to fault.

As with the previous versions, the Actik Core still has a red light mode to preserve night vision and is also less bothersome to others trying to sleep when moving about camp. It takes a whopping 4 x AAA batteries, so we'd recommend getting yourself a charger and some rechargeable batteries to keep long-term costs down. It has a useful battery life indicator (green 100%-50%, yellow 50%-25% and red 25%- 0%) so you don't get caught out. Compatible with mounting accessories that allow the lamp to be attached to any kind of helmet, or to a bicycle The Storm 400 is IP67 rated — completely protected from dirt and dust ingress and is waterproof to a depth of one meter (in 30-minute test conditions). It's ideal if you're a part-time hiker, caver, climber or such. The three dimmable LEDs add versatility. The green light can make reading more straightforward, this might be helpful if you have to read an instruction manual or a map to get to your location. In a festival environment, we used the max brightness mode to find our way across the field to the portaloos and the standard beam to do the camp cooking. We used the dimmest mode to sort out our messy tent after dusk, and the red light while chatting and socializing. It's perfect for all scenarios, except one. The Petzl Actik Core has a water resistance rating of IP X4. This means it is acceptable for light rain but should you find yourself out in a storm with lots of driving rain, you'd probably want to put it away, and it definitely isn't submersible. Petzl ACTIK CORE 450: FunctionalityThe new Actik Core is amazingly bright for its size and even though it has gained 7 grams over the previous model (at least by my scale), it is still very light and compact. Olight Perun 2: A robust and versatile flashlight that can be used in a multitude of situations thanks to it's three mounting options including occasionally being worn as a headlamp.

BioLite Headlamp 425: A comfortable no-bounce headlamp that's incredibly lightweight. The rear red beam is an unusual feature, handy for group situations. Not all headlamps are made the same. Some feature long-reaching, super-bright beams, some feature extra straps for support and some feature a red light as well as a white one, which helps with your night vision. WARNING: This lamp is not certified for road use: when used in areas subject to traffic regulations, Petzl lights are no substitute for required standardized lights. Not all headlamps have a flood light option, but it’s a great function to have for proximity lighting. Best for around camp or in a tent, flood lights cast a wide beam and maximize the view right in front of you. Some headlamps will have two LEDs, one for spot lighting and one for flood lighting, while others (like the Coast FL75R) allow you to shape one single LED into a distance beam or an up-close flood. In their specs, most manufacturers will call out a lamp’s beam distance—for example, the BioLite HeadLamp 325 has an 10-meter flood and a 70-meter spot. The Petzl Actik Core features both a flood and spot beam We have spent the past couple of weeks using the Actik Core headlamp for various activities, including late-night dog walking, sky watching, festival camping and using during wildlife rehabilitation activities. Here's what we think. Petzl ACTIK CORE 450: DesignNitecore NU31: A durable headlamp that's built to last in all environments and weather. There's a slight green tint in the white light, but this wouldn't bother most users. The Silva Terra Scout XT is a very affordable headlamp built for the eco-conscious consumer. It is made from hemp and 100% recycled plastics, which means it leaves a 90% lower CO2 footprint as well. In addition to helping the planet, this construction process means that each unit has its own unique look, and it also makes it very lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Petzl Actik Core Advanced Headlamp. ACTIK® with a rechargeable battery! The ideal rechargeable headlamp to extend your dynamic outdoor activities. Casting 600 lumens, ACTIK® CORE provides powerful and comfortable lighting to go with you when you're running, trekking, or mountaineering. Its phosphorescent reflector makes it easy to find in the dark and red lighting keeps you from blinding those around you when you’re with a group. ACTIK® CORE comes with the CORE rechargeable battery and also works with three standard batteries, thanks to its HYBRID CONCEPT design. Features It does have an unusually robust design for a headlamp. Its IPX8 waterproof rating means that it's safe for continuous immersion in water and the anodized aluminum housing makes it incredibly strong. During our review, it even got dropped from one meter on hard ground with no adverse effects whatsoever. Durable, comfortable, and versatile, the Petzl Actik Core is a fantastic headlamp for use in just about any activity. We appreciate its bright lamp and rechargeable batteries, which should be standard on just about every high-end headlamp these days. This model features Petzl’s trademark reliability and great build-quality too, making it easy to recommend to anyone shopping for a new light source for use in the outdoors. In keeping with its flashlight design, the Olight Perun 2 is the brightest light on our list at an impressive 2500 lumens. However, this is extremely bright and may be overkill for your purposes. The reflective strip on the headband will make you more visible to others and will also make it easier to find in the dark. The front bezel of the headlamp articulates to adjust the light to your desired angle. The BioLite HeadLamp 330 is ideal if you want to save a bit of cash and don't need as many lumens as the other BioLite models that sit in this guide offer. It is so tiny you'll soon forget you have it on. It has a 'no bounce' design that rests flat against the forehead which is mostly useful for runners, but it also means that it won't get in the way of you looking through a scope or viewfinder. This headlamp also comes with a host of other useful features. It's rated at IP67, meaning that it is fully waterproof and dustproof for up to a meter (which we successfully put to the test in our Knog Bilby 400 headlamp review). What makes it the most customizable headlamp on our list is its ModeMaker app for PC or Mac. Simply plug the headlamp into a USB port and you can set up 14 different saved modes for your headlamp to suit your preferences. But we also found the Olight Perun 2 a fantastic light for camping thanks to its clever design features. We loved how you can attach it to a tent pole via its magnetic base and even set a three or nine minute timer so that it will automatically turn off without you needing to leave your sleeping bag. What is the best budget headlamp?
