Sperm health: If starting a family is on your to-do list, zinc might be a supplement that you, or your male partner, will want to consider for maximum sperm health. According to Mannaker, “sperm is extremely susceptible to cell damage, which can be a result of a variety of things, including being exposed to pollution, eating fried foods frequently, and living a stressful lifestyle.” Zinc acts as an antioxidant, helping support sperm health and reducing the risk of damage.

Pharmacodynamic studies were conducted in Wilson's disease patients on the combination of Wilzin (50 mg three times daily) with ascorbic acid (1 g once daily), penicillamine (250 mg four times daily), and trientine (250 mg four times daily). They showed no significant overall effect on copper balance although mild interaction of zinc with chelators (penicillamine and trientine) could be detected with decreased faecal but increased urinary copper excretion as compared with zinc alone. This is probably due to some extent of complexion of zinc by the chelator, thus reducing the effect of both active substances. Reference: Institute of Medicine. Nevertheless, while awaiting zinc induced duodenal metallothionein production and consequential effective inhibition of copper absorption, zinc acetate dehydrate could be administered initially in symptomatic patients in combination with a chelating agent. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Symptoms - Godfrey JC, Conant Sloane B, Smith DS, Turco JH, Mercer N, Godfrey NJ Zinc gluconate and the common cold: a controlled clinical study J Int Med Res. (1992 Jun) Supplementing with a vitamin or mineral is likely to help you only if you suffer from a deficiency or an insufficiency in this vitamin or mineral. Elevations of serum alkaline phosphatase, amylase and lipase may occur after a few weeks of treatment, with levels usually returning to high normal within the first one or two years of treatment. The Zinc market along with almost all mineral’s like Magnesium and Calcium, are a disaster. Some take the time to do the math of not only “elemental” into their fact sheet, but also the bio-availability. Both are massively important. For instance you often find 220mg of “Zinc Gluconate” but the actual Zinc elemental which is what the RDA is ALWAYS referring to is only 50mg and then to make matters worse by selling it as 220mg and not saying 50mg they don’t factor in the bio-availability of that 50mg of Zinc Gluconate elemental which is only 60% leading you to 21mg which is twice the RDA and what you’d take to boost deficiency or when you’re trying to heal from an ailment. You can take such doses in the 20mg elemental RDA for long periods of time but really once you hit 30-40mg or even higher for some people there are reasons for going higher, it should be in short stints and taking some elemental booster that Zinc is linked to to offset any deficiency issues. In those instances the length you can take Zinc for prolonged periods is undefined if taking elemental boosters but I’d say its still not wise given your body is good at managing almost everything that goes 50-100% above RDA over time so long as the bodies working properly.

Consuming much more than your RDA [1] can be harmful. In the short term, high doses can cause nausea [18] and vomiting. [102] In the long term, they can lead to a copper deficiency. [103] [104] 3. (2018 Mar 1) Maybe the most popular “testosterone booster” is D-aspartic acid (DAA, or D-aspartate). DAA did increase testosterone levels in two studies, one that used 2.66 g/day [118] and the other 3.12 g/day, [119] but two later studies found no increase with 3 g/day, [120] [121] and the latest even noted a decrease with 6 g/day. (2005) To ensure adequate intake of zinc (8 milligrams for women and 11 milligrams for men), be sure to consume foods rich in zinc daily. If you are already consuming a diet high in zinc and meeting your dietary requirements, it is not advisable to take additional zinc in the form of supplements. With high intake of zinc through food sources, there is no need to be concerned about overconsumption, as the body will compensate accordingly. Overconsumption of zinc usually occurs when supplements are consumed rather than using foods. (2020) As copper deficiency may also cause myeloneuropathy, physicians should be alert to sensory and motor symptoms and signs which may potentially indicate incipient neuropathy or myelopathy in patients treated with Wilzin. Zinc citrate and picolinate are other forms of zinc supplements that are considered to be well absorbed, and the zinc oxide form is likely not absorbed as well.
