About this deal

The top-level Quarto code is included below, followed by the code of the Quarto piece, cylinder, and cube Custom Shapes, followed by a link to the rest of the code, and then finally a quick tutorial for the Glimmer DSL for SWT Canvas Shape DSL. different pieces each with 4 characteristics: light or dark, round or square, tall or short, solid or hollow.

Quarto is distinctive in that there is only one set of common pieces, rather than a set for one player and a different set for the other. It’s a commercially available board game for two players: you can see an example board to the right. So the space labelled A in the last diagram is the bottom layer of a 3D cube, and the space labelled B is above it in the third dimension. Gigamic publishes games recognized around the world and also offers French versions of the best games from foreign publishers.

My only complaint is that it can be hard to tell which way is “up” on the pieces – which is important to tell the difference between the pieces that are solid from the ones that have a hole cut out from the top.

As far as that goes, I've only discovered that it is better to play to not lose than it is to play to win. But those 4 pieces must have at least one attribute in common; tall/short, dark/light, hollow/solid, rounded/straight. But you might reasonably be wondering how on earth you’d keep track of the 16,384 pieces with fourteen different attributes (weight? You may have noticed there’s still a pesky number in our equation: the 2, reflecting the fact we are on a two-dimensional game board. The object is to place the fourth piece in a row in which all four pieces have at least one attribute in common. What size boards are possible, if we say that there must be the same number of spaces on the board as there are pieces, and all our pieces are different? Now, I always make silly mistakes in this game which cost me dearly – and not just failing to spot a win! While one would think that in a 2-player game there are equal ways to win and lose, it seems there are seven times as many losing methods as there are winning methods. different pieces each with 4 characteristics: light or dark, round or square, tall or short, solid or hollow.

Almost all of the reviews on Board Game Quest are from review copies of a game provided by the publisher. is possibly the most mentally tough game in the Gigamic range and requires focus, concentration and a poker-face. When I lecture on the mathematical theory behind board games, Quarto is one of my favourite examples.

Keeping track of the relationships between the layers avoids the need to think too hard about the fourth dimension, and if you do this you may notice that there are loads of ways to make two-in-a-row. I actually think I prefer the mini size as the smaller components work fine and I like the portability it offers. IE, whenever you place a piece, you should already know there is at least one piece available that you can give that cannot win. If none of the players sees the alignment during the move during which it is created, it loses any value and the game continues.
