Chris Gee has been working on the south-eastern side of Twenty-Seven, looking at the robber-cut where Neolithic stone-hunters not only removed the entire wall but also attempted to remove the prone orthostats that held the stone-cladding against the interior wall face. The partially drilled stone excavated by Olivia and Phoenix this afternoon. The unsuccessful attempt to bore a hole through the slab is highlighted in red. (Sigurd Towrie) Thirty-Nine is the second confirmed earlier building underlying Structure Ten, and is probably responsible for the collapse of Ten’s south-western wall at the end of its first phase. The other is Structure Twenty in the north-eastern section of the building.

It has been a difficult week, weatherwise, so time now to rest weary muscles and partake of a refreshment or two.
More evidence of stone features inside the building are beginning to emerge – including another orthostat near the south-western wall. The free July 2023 monthly calendars are generic templates and blank with weeks starting on Sunday. The calendars are available in multiple styles. While Tony planned the new wall section, Lewis revealed more of the stone tumble at the base of the outer face. This, thought to be part of an upper section of the outer wall face, will then be fully planned and modelled before it is removed. On the “ Great Wall”, Lewis and Tony finished off the extension opened by the UHI Archaeology Institute students earlier in the season.
