About this deal

A world with only one city left standing. The gods drowned, the world drowned. The enemy comes and takes over humans and burst out and causes mayhem. Priests rule, whale lords rule. The sea gives and takes. Fear is always near, when will the Enemy return? Ladybird, Puffin and Penguin are imprints of Penguin Random House UK. Across their extensive list, we believe there is a story for every child, everywhere.

This book was very slow and I ultimately had to put it down when I was just over a third of the way through. The main character was written more like a 20-something adult than a 12 year old child, and the story was too slow and had too many inconsistencies in small details to make me want to continue. Not if Ellie gets her chance to save the boy first; she is determined to prove that he is innocent. There must be something in one of her workshops, one of her inventions, that she can use to offer up proof. She doesn't have to tell everyone all of her secrets, as long as her inventions are there to protect her. The past cannot harm her if she won't speak it. Besides, she doesn't have time for friendship right now anyway. Saving the boy might be the only thing that can save the City from itself. I enjoyed this series greatly. This finl book is the most emotional of the lot. You really feel your heart being twisted for Ellie. My ultimate favourite character in this book is without a doubt Castion. I think he is brave and, although Ellie has a place in his heart, he always tries to do what is best for everyone. Even after he finds out about Ellie’s secret, it doesn’t change how he feels for her. Murray's debut novel certainly didn't disappoint. The set-up grabbed me from the start; an independent female inventor living in the only city left in the world (after The Drowning) saves a mysterious boy who has just emerged from the belly of a beached whale...What a thrilling conclusion to a brilliant trilogy. I have been hooked on this series ever since reading the very first chapter of Orphans of the Tide and this final instalment lived up to all of my expectations and more. All of the threads from the previous two books were drawn together with some totally new ingredients thrown in for good measure.

Although perhaps a little long to use in English lessons, Orphans of the Tide would be a brilliant text to use as a class story, with a book club or as a high-quality text to extend those children achieving greater depth (it is definitely aimed at very able readers).

Singularly brilliant' - Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars and The Mercies The final instalment in the breathtaking Orphans of the Tide trilogy, which The Times calls 'Unputdownable'. There is so much to appreciate in the narrative. Murray has created a brilliantly dark and original world. A City living in fear and shrouded in suspicions and secrets. Frightening Inquisitors who keep the people safe and watch over the city and are hellbent on finding Seth and killing him. Orphaned children fighting for justice. A bombshell revelation half-way through that will leave jaws-dropped. Alongside the narrative are extracts from the diary of the previous Vessel, Claude Hestermeyer. The diary extracts are cleverly woven into the narrative as the children use the diary as their own guide to understanding the Vessel and the Enemy. The diary extracts reveal a dark and chilling tale about the fates that befell Hestermeyer.

This is one of the best written children’s books I’ve read recently, a high-stakes read, full of twists and turns that will keep readers enthralled. It is, however, somewhat dark, and parents should be aware of that. The sentence has to make sense without the information between the dashes; it’s just a bit more interesting with the added detail.

In "Orphans of the Tide" by Struan Murray we follow the story of Ellie, who has lost her whole family. She lives in a city that believes they are the last city in the world. The city lives in constant fear of The Enemy that is housed in The Vessel. I do like that the gods still living, weren't just killed off. So Ellie does have to continue battling her very real inner demon for her mental health of not humanity, but she's stronger now and very able to do so. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments Energetic and inventive . . . and with some startling surprises, this is also touching about friendship, siblings, loss and courage Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times Winner of the Branford Boase Award 2021, a breathtaking fantasy adventure for fans of His Dark Materials that The Times calls 'Unputdownable'.
