About this deal

Side Note – WD-40. will remove any other lubricants on your chain. If you want to put a different lubricant on your chain you’ll need to make sure all of the WD-40 product has been fully cleaned from the chain. The lubes are decanted into a beaker before being tested to allow them to de-gas, but that can mean that waxy and oily lubes can’t really be directly compared. But still, XCP stood out as having a truly brilliant wear protection level, actually matching that of gear oil. There are many cyclists who primarily use WD-40 and have had no issues. In dry conditions it can arguably keep your chain cleaner longer than regular bike lubricants, because is less oily.

All of the lubricants in this guide are excellent. Their differences are highlighted depending on what conditions you are riding in. But any lubricant from our guide will perform very well compared to poorer lubricants on the market. What are the different types of chain lube? All of the lubes performed fairly similarly, though S100’s White Chain Spray 2.0 stood out as having the best extreme pressure characteristics of any of the spray products. In fact, it was better than chainsaw oil. You love riding your bicycle through different terrains, over sandbanks, dirt paths, and in hot, dry climates. But do you ever wonder how different terrains can affect your bike chain? Sometimes your bicycle can suffer from the dirt and dust that gets displaced when you ride. This debris can cause friction in your chain, ultimately affecting your performance. Here at WD-40®, we have the solution! Our WD-40 Bike® Dry Lube is perfect for bike chains in dry conditions. It has been specially formulated as a bicycle chain lube for off-roaders who like dry and dusty conditions. Keep reading below for a guide on how to lubricate your bike chain. If you want to use normal oil, the gear oil that chain manufacturers recommend works fine. But remember that they’re simply suggesting something that they know will work to some extent, and that doesn’t favour any brand, and that won’t lead to litigation if that product changed or didn’t perform as expected. The problem is that it flings off like crazy, and as the testing has shown, that means it offers poor corrosion protection – there’s no point testing rust proofing without spinning the samples first, which is why I did this the way I did. They were trying to create solvents and degreasers that would prevent rust. It took them 40 times to figure out the formula that is now known as WD-40. The name stands for “water displacement” with the 40 referencing the number of attempts it took to create. Reason six: A chain lube will reduce friction – few road riders would notice the difference, but race teams use O-ring chains (except on some low-capacity and classic bikes), and they use chain lube, despite having the budget to regularly replace those chains.

In short, it's up to you whether you want to invest more in a good chain lubricant, which may have a higher initial cost than others. It is worth thinking about, especially for mid and higher-tier groupsets which most performance road bikes generally have. You could also use it as the only lubricant on your chain, and it will last for 8 to 12 hours of riding in dry conditions. metal discs were coated with chain lubes for this review, as well as another that was left bare; a big thanks to crash-protection and aftermarket accessory specialist Evotech-Performance for manufacturing these for me. Würth High Performance Dry looks really good, and did well across the board but it struggled in comparison to the others in the wear and weld tests. How much that matters will have to come down to your own judgement, but it did have better wear protection than the Muc-Off. The CeramicSpeed bottle has a 'pea' inside to help mix the lubricant, the only lube to have this. Application is also easy with a very fine nozzle. This graph shows the overall performance of the lubes, and the ten that performed the best in these tests…
