About this deal

If you have used the original Gnarbox, you will be surprised to find that all the image and video editing tools have completely disappeared – you no longer have the capability to edit content. I personally welcome this change, since creating an editing app is painful and redundant when there are so many existing ones that simply work better. I think Gnarbox management fully understood that they cannot compete with much more powerful and capable apps like Lightroom for mobile and iMovie, so they decided to simplify the app and only provide more basic review / culling options. After ingesting your images into the GNARBOX, you can fire up Selects on your device to then not only take a look at your images, but also cull, rate them, use metadata tagging tools, and move/copy selects into a new folder. I didn’t notice until after it loaded, and then when I tried to fix it, it uploaded not only the missed files, but also the ones that had originally been uploaded.

In addition, you can change orientation and perform basic cropping, although it is impossible to adjust tilting from the software. As it boots up, you’ll see a loading bar below the GNARBOX logo, and once it’s ready, you’ll be able to ingest your card via the apps on your phone or tablet.

While there’s an option to not ingest already uploaded images (found that after this mistake), I wish there was a notification that would pop up when the card is fully loaded and ready to ingest. Now keep in mind that I was performing my tests in an indoor environment, with temperature staying around 70° F. I cannot imagine what would happen to the unit if I let it copy a memory card at warmer temperatures – it would probably end up melting the chassis and potentially even destroying the data on both the unit itself and the memory card. So if you are planning to use the Gnarbox in the field, keep it cool and try not to subject it to direct sun rays – you might end up damaging it. To me, this is a rather serious hardware issue to be concerned about. From my prior experience working in the IT field, I know that computer hardware just doesn’t last when subjected to very high temperatures. Software Concerns They likely couldn't sustain the business. They made it so overpriced that they ended up with a tiny consumer base, where even though the device likely has a sky high profit margin, once sales level off as people see it for what it is, then it becomes hard to justify ongoing software development to keep it up to date. The Gnarbox is designed to be easy to use, with its minimal interface and buttons. In fact, the unit literally has one button that is used for powering on, powering off and resetting the device, and as I have already indicated, there are two LED status lights. To power on the unit, you push the power on / off button and hold it for one second. The first LED light will blink yellow and red and after 35 seconds or so, the unit should be fully powered up, with the first LED light staying green.

iPhone/iPad Hotspot Tethering means that you can connect your GNARBOX 2.0 to your iPhone or iPad’s cellular hotspot using a lightning to USB-C cable. Files can now be uploaded to Dropbox or Frame.io immediately from the field. Let’s have a look at my workflow, including a couple of workarounds for the times things don’t go to plan. I was very excited about the Gnarbox, but as of today, I cannot say that it can replace a laptop. Not even close… Where to Buy The process of updating the firmware is pretty straightforward, but you need to make sure that you follow the exact steps as outlined in this guide. I skipped the process initially and got confused a little, until I realized that I had to connect to both my WiFi and the device to get the process going. If you do not update, you might not be able to perform specific functions within the mobile apps, so keep that in mind. Overview, Build Quality and Handling Tap to pair the GNARBOX, and once connected, a software update will be at the bottom of the screen if available.I bought one, based on a chat with GNARBOX customer service. I specifically asked if it would allow me to review and delete images directly from the memory card without having to import the whole bunch, as I would into Lightroom or an iPad (which also took forever, but it was an original and very slow iPad). She told me that I “hit the nail on the head”. As it turned out, 1) my camera (Canon 6D Mark II) is too new, so while I could apply some basic edits to an image, I couldn’t save it without it being pink (they’re working on that); 2) images are only viewable vertically on the phone, which made the viewable image smaller on the phone than it was on the camera (they have that in the future development list); and, most importantly 3) they removed the ability to delete single images directly from the memory card because people could accidentally delete the entire contents of the card, so what I specifically requested and was told was a feature, was not available. The device has a lot of potential, but it’s not there yet, so I’ll be dragging my Surface around with me for the forseeable future. The enclosure is relatively light and compact with dimensions of 70mm x 116mm x 27mm and a total weight of just 185g. I can’t recommend this highly enough. It’s been an absolute lifesaver and keeps all my work as secure as possible. I’ve started using the GNARBOX to ingest all my engagement and portrait sessions right after they’re finished, and by the time I’m home, they’re loaded and ready to go. The door latch is secure, and everything about this design feels extremely well thought out and secure.
