About this deal

Scientists believe that the stones can record sound and vision in and around a building and then when the conditions are right the stones act as a projector. Atticus painstakingly picks at the loose ends of the case, taking the investigation discovery process to the next level. As for the narration: Simon Vance was a great narrator, as far as the voices went, but when a book you're reading says someone "laughed" it seems pretty silly to just read the word without sounding a little like you are laughing. His skill set isn’t unique but he is quite unique with the composite intelligence of many detectives who have passed before while having a quite individual back story.

When two little pigs leave their two little homes to go out walking one morning, little do they know that they’ll come back to find their friends Bear and Moose have moved in. Also, not the narrator's fault, I found the language and descriptions, especially at the start of the novel, far too flowery which really puts me off. Low on money, desperate to find something to satisfy his natural talents he opens a detective agency.

I found the writing to be skilled with an intelligent plot, gritty but realistic characters and engaging prose. With twists and turns galore, a very amiable protagonist and a plot that kept me glued to my sofa The House in the Woods was a welcome addition to my reading pile. This is positive proof that employing a first rate narrator can rescue a book that is far from being anything like convincing . Each picture will be talked about and the details enjoyed and savoured, not least those showing the building stages which are sure to encourage questions and comment. But even in the attempts of an exciting scene, the author never made the most of when the main character was held against his will.

I listened to book one and two back to back as I enjoyed this author's writing style, layered plot and fully developed characters. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. Now that I’ve read The House in the Woods, I discover that I’ve waited five years for this story, which I didn’t realize until I finished reading it. The first was in the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London where I and two other investigators witnessed a pair of legs walking slowly up the main staircase. He’s behind in his rent and he has a previous solved case, where the convicted felon has absconded, playing in the back burner of his mind.

So I should start by saying I listening to this as an audio book and I think that the narration had a big part to play in my initial lack of enjoyment of the novel as a whole. The plot may sound a little familiar with true crime fans spotting a few similarities with a heinous crime that has recently had more publicity but be aware that the direction this fictional story takes isn’t as clear cut. The press quickly dubs the case 'The Christmas Eve Massacre', Ralph becomes prime suspect, and his trial is set to begin soon. I was trying to see how they were connected to each other and to remember who was who and what their background was etc.I didn't feel particularly invested in any of the characters so it was left to the plot to jolly us along, which it did enough for me to finish it. Even down to the uncomfortable scene in a pub where she says 'no' several times to Finch asking her if she'd like another drink only for him to bring her one anyway. He does have a certain amount of charm though, with his rugged good looksand devil may care attitude, but in my opinion anyone who has twenty crates of books and loves his dog has to be a good person. Slightly disappointed with this book, although set in Ireland around may places I’m aware of, the pace of the books was very slow and boring at times . The narrator of the audiobook, Simon Vance, is a superstar and does his usual excellent job with this.
