About this deal

Hana just hasn’t been the same since the death of her beloved husband. While some members of her family think the trip will be a good distraction for her, others are more accepting of and patient with her grief. But as more and more of her party start dying, and a storm begins to bear down on the island, Hana must rouse herself to cooperate with Elin’s investigation while attempting to grapple with her own unresolved emotions in the face of so much new and unrelenting trauma. I have to admit, I didn’t enjoy the first book: “ Sanatorium” and I found Detective Elin Warner character a little naive, incompetent to solve murder mysteries! But I had so many unanswered questions and I decided to have a second waltz with Elin ( I truly wished she learned how to dance at this sequel) The Retreat recalls the one-by-one nerve-shredding of Agatha Christie at her darkest. A fresh, daring, irresistible thriller.' A. J. Finn, No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window Elin tells Will that her father is planning a visit. Trying to lighten the mood, Will mentions that a project he designed has been nominated for an award: a hotel called Lumen. Note: the mood will NOT be lightened. CHILLING! The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse is an eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat. Let’s set the mood. . .You’re in a remote location—at a hotel—and there’s a snowstorm. The winds are howling, the snow is pelting in every direction, there’s a missing person, and a dead body shows up!”

The debut book written by author Sarah Pearse is entitled ‘The Sanatorium’. It was released by the Pamela Dorman Books publication in February 2021. Author Pearse has set this book in Le Sommet and has mentioned the primary characters in the roles of Elin Warner, Issac Warner, Laure, and a few others. Initially, Pearse has described Le Sommet as a place overshadowed by high peaks and half-hidden by dense forests. It has always been believed to have a sinister appearance. This former sanatorium has been plagued by some troubling rumors for a very long time. But now, the once-abandoned sanatorium has been renovated and converted into a 5-star hotel.

Steed seems nice, but what’s with his mysterious info drop about a family member who died from a fall? Plus WHY would Farrah and Will want to be part of the re-brand of creepy Carey Island? And Farrah’s explanation for not recognizing Caleb/Chris was not believable. A superbly atmospheric crime debut. Deliciously creepy and clever, it’s everything you could want in a thriller. Very highly recommended!” Just like The Sanatorium, The Retreat tells a twisty, chilling and tense tale in a location so vividly imagined, you feel like you’re there too, among the guests. Long may Sarah Pearse continue to ruin the idea of luxury-resort travel for us all…”

We all fancy a spa break don't we? Well don't include me after reading this book. It had me hooked from start to finish.' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Elin swims over to the island and hears a gunshot. The guests have barricaded themselves in the lodge and she can’t get inside. Haha finally someone has some sense! But there shouldn’t be anything too traumatizing in the latest case she’s caught, out at an island retreat off the South Devon coast where she lives. Never mind that her fiance Will designed the resort, or that his sister Farrah is a manager there. A young woman, seemingly inebriated, has fallen off a cliffside. CCTV shows that it was likely accidental, but the more Elin investigates, the less sure she is that it wasn’t murder. There’s something about this island that feels deeply off, a feeling that’s affirmed for her by the resort employee who originally discovered the woman’s body:Why did Seth and Bea both have limestone powder on their mouths?? I would understand if it was just found randomly on their bodies, but why their mouths??? While Elin tries to solve the murders she missteps in things concerning her personal life and by the end of the story decides to make an effort to try and discover herself! Once again, Sarah Pearse has situated her novel in a deeply atmospheric and vivid setting. The island locale in question is bathed in suspicion, shadows and darkness. It is also tragically beautiful as it houses a wellness retreat. Pearse does a fine job of carefully describing her location base. I felt like I was stood on the same ground as the lead character and the occupants of this shady island. Pearse is one author who is brilliant at setting the scene and immersing her readers in the surroundings of her book. Fans of The Sanatorium will appreciate Pearse’s eye for detail in the location aspects of The Retreat. It truly does magnify the intensity of the events in this novel. When guests at a five-star resort in the Alps disappear mid-blizzard, vacation’s over for detective Elin Warner. It’s The Shining but with a full house.” A eerie, atmospheric thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder as you read. A wonderfully chilling story of grief, revenge, and family secrets. An absorbing escape!' Ashley Audrain, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Push

At dinner Will and Farrah say that people should stop being obsessed with the island’s past while Elin says you can’t erase it. Barbed branches pull at his shirt. One catches his arm, snags the soft skin on the inside of his wrist. Blood flares – a ragged line of tiny red beads bursting through his skin. The writing was sloppy and lazy. The characters were shallow and indistinguishable, the pacing was off consistently. The story unraveled on the spot, because it just had to work somehow. Therefore, there was no way for the reader to anticipate anything as the plot wasn’t build throughout the story. I’ve had loads of people asking about LUMEN, so I’ll explain the vibe. LUMEN’s a luxury retreat on the gorgeous island you’ve just seen, off the South Devon coast. The architect was inspired by Mexican legend Luis Barragan, so we’re talking luxe villas nestled in woodland with views out to sea. There’s some pretty special stuff: an outdoor yoga pavilion, glass-bottomed pool, and this crazy rope swing stretching out over the water… you can drop straight off into the sea. One of the most spectacular features is an amazing villa on a private islet – that’s for all you honeymooners. I couldn’t get my mitts on that one as it’s already booked, but it looks stunning.’

An atmospheric thriller with the perfect claustrophobic setting. This is equal parts creepy, suspenseful and gruesome—everything you could want in a novel for this genre. This is a sure-fire hit guaranteed to keep you seeing shadows in the snow on those freezing winter nights. I loved it.” Ollie closes his eyes. He knows it’s Thea, but in his head, he’s turned her into something else. A puppet. A mannequin. I enjoyed the character Elin a lot more this time and the story itself was more entertaining than ‘The Sanatorium’ but still not quite there for me. Elin talks to Johnson, the investigator on the Creacher case. He tells her about another girl, Lois Wade, who went missing from an Outward Bound trip before the Creacher incident. He says an eyewitness saw Creacher near the teens’ tents on the night: Farrah Riley.

Tom comes to tell them he saw a man running across the bridge to the islet (where the isolated villa is). Elin heads out there. When he reaches the bottom, he jumps down onto the sand and runs toward the small overhang he and Thea had lain in last night, contraband bottles in their hands. The longer Elin stays, the more secrets she uncovers. And when someone else drowns in a diving incident, Elin begins to suspect that the old stories about the island are true. Pearse goes from strength to strength in The Retreat. The suspense inexorably builds to a stunning climax. An added treat is the return of Elin Warner, who is a fascinating character one can only root for.”
