About this deal

Through ‘Cuts Both Ways’, Candice has captured the reality of many young people in London and other cities marred by gun and knife crime. That said deals very convincingly with difficult issues like bereavement and grief, racism, as well as colourism and the impact of different cultural traditions on modern day family life. I really liked this book when I first started it, I was instantly into it which is down to the details in the storytelling.

The premise of this book is about a young girl named Cynthia Adegoke, who has to transfer to an elite school after her family experienced a traumatic incidents back in London. He's kind and sweet, and her parents are pleased - someone like Thomas will be good for her 'future prospects'. Her debut book I Am Not Your Baby Mother - about being a black British mum - published in May 2020 by Quercus, and made the Sunday Times Bestseller list. The twists aren't exactly twists, but that's not the point; the point is how the characters react to them, not we humble readers. Jadell went through some tribulations of her own, and it was sad that she ended up on that path, but was able to get support from Cyn nonetheless.Candice Brathwaite has such an incredible way with words, this jump from non-fiction to fiction is a smooth transition. With the youthful tone and flare in how this is written, you can really feel Cynthia's personality and attitude coming through. A lot of teenagers, especially black girls, will be able to relate to Cynthia, who narrates the story from her first-person perspective. At her new school, Cynthia immediately finds herself caught between two brothers - head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted Black brother, Isaac. The knowing you really like / love someone and then finding out they aren't the person you thought they were, you've been manipulated they have omitted information, they have told you lies BIG ONES and the deceit urgh, awful awful feelings.

This is a brilliant read and it leaves you both wanting a sequel and realising not every story has a happy end. Tackling the complexities of growing up Black and British, Cuts Both Ways is the first fiction title from the Sunday Times best-selling Candice Brathwaite, author of I Am Not Your Baby Mother. In a world where this "fiction" is so relatable, timely and the reality of life for many, I am glad that Candice has put ink to paper and brought the twists, turns and wider impacts that come with it to the surface. But how many people think about the loved ones and families left to deal with the aftermath of a senseless loss of life in the streets?

She is a contributing editor at Grazia and a presenter on Lorraine, and her writing has appeared in the Guardian, Harper's Bazaar, Stylist, Metro and Huffington Post. The none so subtle pointing out of white privilege throughout was, at times, mind opening and uncomfortable for me and the tackling of such an important issue, knife crime was done in a responsible and measured way with full explanation and sources of support at the end of the book. Although it’s aimed at a younger audience, I still found the story to be interesting, gripping and heartwarming. Only for five minutes - the next 30 years you‘ll be rotting in jail where nobody could care less about you.

On a deeper level it is about the socio-political and economic values and expectations that the BPOC community face on a daily basis. it’s defiantly a serious conversation, and i feel that everyone should read this book, it was entertaining but very moving and insightful! Cynthia wants to follow her own heart and balance her own feelings with the pressure from her parents. This was a sharp and funny fascinating look at what it is to be a black teenager in Britain today and looked at issues such as race, identity and who someone is in themselves, their school, their surroundings and their family, ethnicity and class. At her new school, Cynthia immediately finds herself caught between two brothers—head boy Thomas, who is white, and his adopted Black brother, Isaac. Especially not when your love interests are adopted brothers from different cultures, each of whom you relate to on a different level, each of whom seems to be lying to you about different things, neither of whom you can really trust.

What is meant to be a fresh start for Cynthia leads to a 'fish out of water' scenario in which she starts at a posh new school as one of the only black students. Unfortunately, this was less of a shock for me as we spent quite a lot of the book building up to the shock reveal, so it was already revealed without the words being placed on the page. Author, journalist and TV presenter, Candice Brathwaite started utilizing the internet in 2015 to tell her own motherhood story. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed.A sharp and authentic love story about 16-year-old Cynthia, who finds herself caught between two brothers: one who is Black and the other who is white. Lots of other themes are explored, violence, murder, trauma etc but all really important and all necessary to be written about even if it's through a fictitious story.
