About this deal

As Zoe starts to face up to her painful past and gradually accept some help, the secrets surrounding the sudden departure of a guest and the conflict between the staff come to a head. Can she trust the dozen people she is stranded with? And is her mysterious sponsor friend or foe? Should they bow and worship an image set up by an earthly authority which has issued a command to bow down and worship on the pain of death? Or will they worship the Lord their God and to Him only bow? (One can’t help but see the symbolic parallel to Revelation 13 here) This judgment scene takes place BEFORE the executive judgment. It takes place sometime after the 1260 years in which the horns power flourished. And when the executive judgment is handed out, the horn’s power is seen as again strong. Should they eat the food (we can compare that to spiritual food as well as physical food) which the Babylonian authority sets before them? Or shall they eat the simply diet God has ordained. Yawn. This book has almost the exact same plot as Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. Except the secrets are not as compelling and the characters are no one I wanted to root for or even hang out with for four hours. Even the mystery’s solution was easy to guess. Unfortunately, The Sanctuary was a complete miss for me. 2 stars.

The Sanctuary: A gripping and twisty thriller full of dark

The thriller side of the story is definitely quite domestic and not as gritty as I was hoping. But there's a lot going on, which does make it difficult to predict easily. Four pregnant women attend a yoga retreat, hoping to deal with the myriad issues surrounding their pregnancies. The start of the novel was quite slow because there were a lot of characters to introduce but, once it got going, I was hooked. Despite my frustrations at Zoey, I did genuinely get involved in the characters and relationships within the book. The first 60% or so is really good. The setting is described extremely visually allowing you to picture events easily. There are some creepy, menacing hints from the start that despite Selina's many efforts to ‘deliver’ a relaxing weekend, her plans go badly awry. Poppy concerns you from the start and it becomes a case of curiouser and curiouser. The characters are all portrayed well with the two sisters being an interesting contrast and I like the vibe between them which at times has some needle to it. All the characters are carrying burdens, not of the baby variety, their emotions are all over the place, some feel guilty, others insecure and anxious. There are some good twists, a couple of which are particularly unexpected, there’s tension every which way you look especially from Selina so it's hardly the relaxation they crave, in fact, the whole thing is a dangerous unmitigated disaster. Of course she can leave on the next helicopter, but then she’d have to pay for the flight, plus the two flights it took to get here from New York and any treatment she has had so far. It costs an arm and a leg to stay at The Sanctuary and she has no idea who is paying for her. All she discovers is that it was part of the deal to keep her out of prison – she can’t even remember what she did or is supposed to have done – but who does she know who has that kind of money? No-one it would seem.My guilty pleasure is falling asleep reading or listening to a fabulous whodunnit or psychological thriller - the better written and more gripping the faster I fall asleep, I imagine as I am so absorbed and transported, I forget about the stress of the day and finally relax. Unfortunately, I found Zoey to be far too nosy which is one of my pet peeves for thrillers. Make her a journalist or a family member seeking answers, and her many questions would have been more justified. I understand that she needed to understand her own place at The Sanctuary, but I feel like all she did was pester into other peoples' lives and that got a little tedious for me.

On a positive note, the ending to the book was good and it did come together well in the end but getting there was just a bit of a slog.Yet, the counterfeit system attempts to take away Christ’s daily intercession ministry, and sets up an earthly daily sacrifice system in which they claim for themselves the power to create the Creator and sacrifice Him daily for the sins of the people.
