About this deal

Bernard is known for bringing everyday carry out of obscurity and into the mainstream, having been published or featured in various publications such as GQ, TIME Magazine, The New York Times, VICE, HYPEBEAST, Outside, and many others. He has also played a part in curating, designing, and developing digital and physical products, resulting in successful crowdfunding projects or limited edition collaboration products with established softgoods brands. He stays on the pulse of the EDC industry by attending trade shows, participating in online interest communities, and actively engaging with fellow gear enthusiasts on social media. The Aurora A8 keychain flashlight has now reached the 2nd generation - The RovyVon Aurora A8x. With the optimized driver and almost 3 times the battery capacity, the Aurora A8x can last up to 70 hours at ultra-low mode (3 lumens), and the PWM has been greatly improved over the original RovyVon range. For reference, here’s a baseline shot, with all the room lights off and almost nothing hitting the sensor. Also, here’s the light with the worst PWM I could find. I’m adding multiple timescales, so it’ll be easier to compare to the test light. Unfortunately, the PWM on this light is so bad that it doesn’t even work with my normal scale, which is 50 microseconds (50us). 10ms. 5ms. 2ms. 1ms. 0.5ms. 0.2ms. In a display faster than 0.2ms or so, the on/off cycle is more than one screen, so it’d just (very incorrectly) look like a flat line. I wrote more about this Ultrafire WF-602C flashlight and explained a little about PWM too. User Interface and Operation UV light is pretty useless for my purposes. Personally I'd rather have a green LED for looking at maps in bed. Moonlight seems to be momentary only – there isn’t a way to get to it in the main group as far as I can see

Red Lantern (20 lumen, 2hrs)- A bit on the bright side, not too bright if everyone is awake, but if you share a tent it could wake your partner. 2x Red Blink Modes - Slow blink, Fast blink. Sometimes I used these modes when running on a busy street.Beam shots of the building are taken at 15 m (16 yd) using a Pixel 6 set to ISO 200 with 1/10 second exposure time. I didn’t runtime UV. I’m not sure how sensitive my meter is to UV, but I can say that the UV emitter on High (there are two UV modes) must be quite inefficient (and/or powerful) because the body heats up a bit with UV on high. Also for whatever concerns there are about UV not penetrating the body – the UV goes through just fine. I can’t speak as to what percentage if any is lost in the passage through the body, but even on Low, the UV is useful. Charging My review copy has Nichia 219c, which is a high CRI variant. I’m very pleased this is an option both because I’d prefer the high CRI (90+) and also I think XP-G3 is just really, really bad. So I have Nichia, and I think you’ll be happier with it too. I used this light as my main light during a power outage for hours at a time and when I went to recharge the light it only took 20 minutes to fully recharge — indicating I really did not use a lot of the battery. Overall it has continued to impress me. Light Quality The main LED produces more of a spot than a flood. I put matte tape on the lens to act as a diffuser, which helped, but for general purpose I prefer more of a flood.

So… yeah, it’s definitely cold white. But at least the tint is neutral and the DUV actually registered as negative (slightly pinkish) though nearly perfectly on the BBL. Rovyvon uses a wide array of materials on their Aurora lights: polycarbonate, GITD, aluminum, stainless, titanium, and copper (whew, did I miss anything?).So no matter what body material you’re looking for, Rovyvon has you covered. The A8x UV is one of the polycarbonate models.I think this might be my first polycarbonate flashlight.Yes, that means it’s essentially a fancy plastic. But Rovyvon didn’t choose polycarbonate just to be cheap – the ultra-clear material makes the A8x very lightweight and it allows for a single body material while being able to use it as a lens for the side-firing auxiliary lights. And it looks pretty sweet, being able to see all of the internals. The bezel of the A8x is stainless steel, which does a little bit to offset the light-weight polycarbonate.I always appreciate a nice stainless bezel for (1) its great looks, and (2) its toughness / drop protection. Here’s a couple of runtimes on the highest main modes. As you can see, the stepdown sort of kills the output measurement. An upgrade of the popular Aurora A8, the A8x version offers improved brightness levels and a lower standby current for longer lasting output. As with the original version, the keyring light provides innovative design features making it ideal for a range of applications. ANSI FL1 standards: The runtime is measured until the light drops to 10% of its initial output (30 seconds after turning on). This does not mean that the flashlight is not usable anymore. The last column shows how long the light actually works till it shuts off. If there is a + symbol, it means that the test was stopped at that particular point, but the light was actually still running. This happens on certain occasions, with certain drivers, firmware, or batteries. Peak beam intensity and beam distance measurements

UV Lantern (3hrs) - Interesting novelty, maybe you can find a cool bug or spot a fake ID with it, not too useful for me.The Nichia 219C I chose is a light I am very familiar with, though in this configuration it outputs a 4500K color temp with a max of 450 lumens and a CRI rating “min 90”. Pairing that with the very shallow and smooth reflector the light can illuminate a very large area with really useable light. It has some throw, but not enough where you could expect to illuminate stuff very far away. It’s a small light for closer work, but it fills a room quite nicely. In Use IP66 "equivalent" leaves something to be desired. The washing machine is a bit of a torture test for it, but seeing that it is so small it's not hard to imagine that this scenario happens all the time so it would be nice if it was more waterproof. If you'd like to install the tritium vials by yourself, please get the correct dimensions - length 6.0mm and diameter 1.5mm. There are two different versions of the Rovyvon A8x, the difference being the Aux LEDs. One has amber, red, and blue LEDs. The sample I have is the “UV” model which has UV, red, and neutral white aux LEDs.It’s great to have the option of a neutral white LED.It’s unfortunately not high CRI, but is pleasant nonetheless.I’ve found that the super floody, side-firing, neutral white LED is pretty handy for nighttime reading and low-light table-top illumination.Measurements for the white aux LED are: The RovyVon Aurora A8x keyring torch has a maximum output of 650 lumens from the Cree XP-G3 cool white LED and is powered by a built-in 330mAh lithium polymer battery. The cell is rechargeable via a micro USB port towards the base of the light which provides fast and efficient charging.
