About this deal

A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist. Knight’s struggles and personal demons add a layer of authenticity to her character, making her someone readers can truly connect with, giving just enough backstory to authenticate her journey without ever becoming boring or overly complicated. Shadows of Regret was inspired by my time on the women's side of the jail in Peterborough, and analyses the close relationship between victim and villain.

Detective Sergeant Ashley Knight heads up the team, hoping to catch a killer before things progress. It was a well-crafted, entertaining and engrossing police procedural with an interesting new character to follow and I would be happy to recommend it. Other characters involved are a local crab fisherman who seems to find many of the bodies and a disabled man whose relationship with the group at the party or the recent events is unclear. There are lengthy conversations, as they explain to one one another what the have done/are about to do. Huge thanks to Rachel Gilbey of Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me on to the tour and to the publisher for my digital copy of the book, which I have reviewed honestly and impartially. It would seem that there is significant organisation to the crimes and as more bodies appear, DS Knight can only wonder who is planning these killings and for what reason. It’s also very well-paced and exciting, but you get chance to know the characters too, it isn’t just action by any means. If not, then I would recommend using Google Maps Street View to check out some of the locations mentioned in the book.

Greenwood takes his time to delve into the psychological aspects of the characters and the emotional undercurrents of the story. It's always difficult at first to come to grips with the characters in a new series, but Ross introduces them carefully, without an overload of information and feeds more snippits skillfully into the text as the novel progresses. Also, the readers of Death On Cromer Beach will understand the importance of supporting mental health. Another key character in the book is Cromer itself – the author has gained permission from a number of local businesses to feature them and this gives the book a strong authenticity. DCI Kettle will lhead the investigation, with DS Ashley Knight as deputy Senior investigation Officer, with newbie DC Hector Fade by her side . The crimes to be solved in this book are a bit on the gruesome side and Ross doesn’t hold back from plunging us straight into the action from the first chapter with a shocking and grisly discovery on a peaceful Norfolk beach. As more bodies emerge on the beachfront, DS Knight and her team must locate a killer and stop the slayings.
