I played a couple of FPS games on the headset and I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a gaming session this much in a while. Finely tuned to suit a mid-range, but capable enough to deliver a wide variety of ranges, the Game Zero is a splendid companion for shooting games. With its impressively extensive soundstage, I could hear every reload, gunshot and bomb blast with brilliant clarity and power. The sound of stepping on dried leaves or the water tap running sounded so real that it felt as if it’s all happening in the room I am in. The Game Zero came through with absolute precision; I could accurately pinpoint to where a certain sound is coming from. The plush velvet material on the ear pads is gone too. Sennheiser ditched those in favor of a leatherette covering with triple-layer memory foam on the inside. This is not only much more comfortable but means the pads won’t get nasty if you’re prone to sweat. At 50 Ω, the impedance is on the higher side, so the addition of a quality headphone amplifier can significantly improve the performance of these headphones, particularly when a powerful dedicated audio card is not driving them.
The only true change is that these headphones are collapsible. The metal bracing on top of the ear cups allows them to fold down completely whereas the Game Ones could not. Sennheiser includes a pretty nice carrying case, too. Here are the parts that I believe can use a little improvement. The bass on the headset is disappointing. For the test, I put on one of the most bass-heavy songs, Low Life by Future, to feel a little low-end thump, and even then, that oomph was missing. It felt as if the manufacturers decided to compromise a little on the bass to retain the kind of tightness and crispness the audio holds. Moreover, the volume on the Game Zero could have been a little better. Even when my PC and the headset’s volume was cranked all the way up, I still found it a little underwhelming. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t blow me away or push me out of my seat. I remember wishing I had the option to raise it just a little more. Final Verdict Additionally, both the Zero and One from Sennheiser have a 50-ohm impedance. Due to their low impedance, they can be connected directly to your phone, laptop, desktop, or gaming console without the use of a preamp, DAC, or headphone amplifier.I’m going to start off talking about the Game Zero in isolation, as I assume that’s how most people will use it. This is also brave new territory for the Game Zero—the previous version had a rated impedance of 150 ohms, which for the majority of people means “You need an external amp to drive this properly.” The updated version we’re reviewing is a low-impedance 50-ohm model, meaning it should be suitable for use with pretty much any motherboard’s on-board audio. The Sennheiser Game Zero and the Game One share similar sound characteristics on paper. Both headphone pairs have a frequency response of 15Hz to 28000Hz, and their mics have a frequency response of 50Hz to 16000Hz. It's worth noting that while they do come with an in-built microphone, this only works when you’re connected through Bluetooth - not the USB-C dongle. That’s because the dongle is focused on providing low-latency audio, so there is minimal disruption between what’s happening in your game and what you’re hearing. However, it does mean that you won’t be able to communicate with team-mates online. It’s much more convenient than reaching for your amplifier’s or computer’s volume control. Both models showcase impressive positional sound quality, a comfortable design, and deliver accurate bass levels. The intended wider soundstage is better capitalized on here. Instead of losing sound, the seal traps what you want to hear in and carries some ambient noise in through the intended channel. It works much better for these headphones, and I’m glad the change is here.
