About this deal

Overall, a Shimano Tiagra groupset is quite a bit heavier than a 105 groupset, but almost 200g of the difference is in the chainset Shimano calls its latest calliper design SLR-EV Dual Pivot and this is now found on 105 (above), Ultegra and Dura-Ace. The new symmetrical twin pivot design equalises the braking forces through each arm for better control and power. Then you have to factor in whether the shifting control levers have one additional position than that found in Tiagra groupsets. Shimano 105 Groupset Upgrades Both Shimano Tiagra and Shimano 105 use the same ratio of gear cable pull to rear derailleur movement, so you can fit a 105 derailleur in Tiagra system if you want to The fact that the 105 groupset is 11-speed is what sets it apart from Shimano Tiagra, that being only 10-speed.

Nobody needs 11t, who is not racing. And 2t jumps are just incredibly annoying, making it impossible to keep a comfortable cadence. Chain reaction Cycles and CRC are trading names of Wiggle Ltd (In Administration) registered in the United Kingdom at 1000 Lakeside, Suite 310, Third Floor N E Wing, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO6 3EN, What you need to decide on is how important it is to have 11-speeds. It does, of course, come with a cost. Shimano Tiagra Groupset Upgrades The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. Yes we can, and we do already. It might even have saved you 20 seconds of your time if you'd seen it!

Unlike 105, Tiagra is available with a triple chainset (with three chainrings rather than two, see below). If you want to go down that route you’ll need to buy the compatible dual control levers. Dual pivot brakes The Tiagra brakes are impressive too. They don't fail to offer the stopping power riders want (and need).

The lightness needed in shifting is similar (if not the same) to that of an Ultegra or Dura-Ace setup. A number of technologies have filtered down to 105 R7000 from the more expensive Ultegra and Dura-Ace groups and Tiagra components are a little heavier. As ever, you pay more for lighter weight.

Like Ultegra, the new R7000 105 derailleurs has taken on some of the features of Shimano’s mountain bike derailleurs. It is now a Shadow rear derailleur. It will also be a little while longer before 11 speed becomes obsolete. With all the top tier Shimano groups being 11-speed you’ll find it easy to upgrade to them and this should help to make it easier to find parts in the future.

You won't be able to get any larger than 53 teeth with Shimano, unless you're prepared to go up to Dura-Ace. The 105 rear derailleurs of yore used to look pretty much like the Tiagra one, now that can’t be said to be the case. Shimano presents these brakes as having the capacity to take up to 28mm wide tires. What we found is that the newest 105 - the R7000 has more drop than it used to (51mm vs 49mm). As an aside, it means you can run new tiagra 4700 mechs with Shimano 11 speed road shifters and cassettes, or 11 speed mechs with new tiagra 10 speed shifters and any 10 speed cassette). The design is the same, both having a four-arm spider. This serves to keep the weight down but the strength and stiffness high. One of the things you can’t do with Tiagra is upgrading part by part to 105. 105 as it is 11 speed you could upgrade part by part to Ultegra, or even Dura-Ace. If you fancy slowly making your bike a higher spec model, you would be better starting with 105 and working from there. Let us look at the parts within the groupsets. STI levers nb: the new sora r3000 actually is still with the old actuation ratio, therefore, you can use older shimano rear derailleurs with the new concealed-cable sora shifters without any issues. My plan to increase the size of my cassette to 32 teeth got very complicated when I was informed that Tiagra had a different cable pull to 105. Phase 1 saw me making do with 30 teeth which works fine with the 105 mech( despite it having a nominal maximum of 28 teeth).
