About this deal

In an act of resistance towards her husband’s exploitation, Rui eats a bowl of seeds that sprout from her body. The Forest Brims Over is a surreal unfolding of a marriage exploring how gender affects our relationships with others and ourselves.”— Andrew King, Secret Garden Bookshop, Seattle, WA Jenna’s mother tells the police they should talk to Adam Winter, a teenage neighbor of the Woolers. He’s autistic and has a drone.

Gully goes to search the treehouse where Avery liked to hang out, but finds nothing. The anonymous witness who says she saw Avery get into Ryan’s car offers to come to the station, but then doesn’t show up. But the witness calls and provides a description of Avery that seems valid. A smart, unguessable mystery set among a cast of satisfyingly flawed characters. Shari Lapena is an auto-buy for me - I always know I'll be in for a treat!'

About Shari Lapena

All in all, this is your standard popcorn 'suspense.' It won't be one for the record books, but it didn't irk tf outta me which is always a good sign. It's like the Switzerland of suspense books 😂 I was obsessed with Everyone Here Is Lying and read it in less than two days, desperate to know what had happened to Avery Wooler. The set-up is so clever with each resident having something to hide that I never knew who to trust. Fast paced, tightly-plotted and with twists so well executed they floored me. Loved every word!” Hours later, Avery is nowhere to be found so William and his wife notify the police. Soon everyone in their idyllic neighborhood is a suspect and the police soon discover that in Stanhope is nothing as it appears. An incredibly clever set-up that made for one of the most gripping and surprising thrillers I’ve read in a while. A one-sitting read." Overall, Not a Happy Family remains the best of La Peña’s domestic thrillers. While Everyone Here is Lying has a similar vibe, it left me questioning characters’ actions and seeking more explanations.

Marion is in love with William. But one day at the hospital, Marion realized William was making out in a supply closet with Nora. So she befriended Avery and one day, Avery showed up at her house with a welt on her face. She asked to stay with Marion so that her father would be blamed. Now here’s a neighborhood thriller done right! I’ve read a handful of mediocre neighborhood thrillers recently so Everyone Here Is Lying was such a refreshing change. As the title suggests, this is one of those neighborhoods where everyone has a secret they don’t want their neighbors or the police to know. I loved listening to these twists unfold. Just hours later, the Wooler family has called the police to report Avery missing. But as they make the rounds asking questions, the cops begin to uncover one secret after another. Secrets that have been buried just under the surface of the supposedly safe neighborhood. The more the detectives learn, the more they realize everyone has something to hide. As they unwind the truth from the lies, however, neighbors start turning on neighbors and their words and actions spin out of control. But despite the police’s attempts, Avery’s disappearance remains unsolved. Where is the little girl? Is it already too late to save her? Only one thing is for certain—no amount of anticipation will prepare them for truth. Avery wasn’t dead. She was hiding down the street at Marion’s house after running away. She wanted her dad to sweat it out a bit and get publically blamed for her disappearance. Marion was the one who called in the tip about Avery getting in Ryan’s car, but Avery doesn’t know that. The story is told from the omniscient POV so we get to see what everyone's thinking. The best part of the writing is how Lapena perfectly captures each parent’s guilt, the distrust, the what if games that each plays in their mind. The character development is superb. The book brings up how each of us has a violent streak. There’s a great sense of suspense and the tension is taut from beginning to end. I had an inkling how it would resolve and I was right (although I didn’t see the exact scenario). But I wanted to see how the very end would play out and I wasn’t disappointed.Lapena keeps the well-developed twists churning, with each a surprise notch in this ever-evolving plot, and she continues this skillful storytelling until the stunning twist at the end . . . memorable." A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Avery opens the front door to escape and Detective Gully is there. Avery tells the police that Marion held her prisoner. Right from the beginning. Lapena does an excellent job of giving us an up-close look into the neighbourhood of Stanhope. It’s no different from your everyday suburban community — there are secrets on every street.
