I found it useful with information laid out in clear and simple terms...there have been a couple of times when another book has been too confusing and I have been able to have it explained clearly by the CPCAB book. -- Bea Craig During the course participants will be introduced to the history and roots of counselling, its value base and core concepts. We will draw, in particular, on basic ideas from the major counselling and psychotherapy approaches that are studied at Metanoia, namely Gestalt, Humanistic, Integrative, Person-Centred, and Transactional Analysis. We will ask straightforward questions about these approaches, for example where did they come from, and what are their similarities and differences? We will identify what the conditions desirable are in counselling and what might bring about healing and change; why do people change and how does this come about in counselling? There's a wide variety of counselling and psychotherapy courses and qualifications available, provided by colleges, universities and private training organisations.

I find this book informative. It breaks everything down and shows good examples. Covers main theorists and the main approaches. This counselling handbook is extremely informative for the new helper studying counselling for the first time. It links particularly well to the CPCAB level 2 programme .... The material in the book is easily accessible and well explained with many practical examples and exercises...I'd highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in counselling as I think you would find it supports your learning well.It even includes a chapter on essay writing skills! (Cas Stewart 2017-01-15) The Certificate in Therapeutic Skills and Studies will introduce you to counselling theory and support you in developing foundational counselling skills that are required prior to commencing further therapeutic training. The certificate is a stand-alone basic skills award issued by Metanoia Institute. Once you’ve completed your core training, you may wish to specialise in a specific area. This may require additional training, for example courses in addiction or bereavement counselling. Or you may wish to go into private practice and want training in setting up and running a business. Part 2: Counselling Studies will help students take their understanding further by considering in detail important theories and professional issues, preparing them to work as a professional counsellor. The book is so easy to read and puts things into "normal" language. I'm now using it as a reference point - it is my "bible".Part 1: Counselling Skills will introduce students to the underpinning knowledge and practical tools needed to develop a range of helping skills for use in a variety of helping roles, showing them what it means to work safely and ethically.
