About this deal

The thought of never drinking alcohol frightens me as there are so many social and cultural influences around us to drink alcohol and similarly to Adrian, the happy times of my life have been about socialising and drinking with friends. I recently spoke with a friend who told me for years she had a three drink limit on a night out and never once did she feel like she’d missed out by swapping to soft drinks after that. With football, like alcohol, for me it’s too big and passionate a thing to merely ‘quite enjoy’ ‘every now and then’. Drinking 100s of units a week, he says, meant facing "some pretty dire consequences with my innards". If you’re the kind of drinker who struggles to stop drinking once you start, consider making your first couple of drinks alcohol-free.

As a radio presenter Adrian currently hosts Question Time Extra Time and Chiles on Friday, both on 5live. I’ve always answered with something lame, along the lines of, “You wanna try watching us sober”… where does this urge come from? His pal, the comedian Frank Skinner, told him he envied his level of drinking, his ability to drink sociably without ending up falling asleep in a skip. A friend of mine happened to be in York and was talking to a taxi driver about football,” Adrian says.

Love Your Sober Year builds on their previous Love Yourself Sober book, set around the annual cycle of nature. I also have a friend who for him moderating was not an option and after a stint in the Priory has managed to kick, what for him was a destructive habit. You might look at the number of units you’ve calculated and think, hang on a minute, do I really need that much? He also comes at it from a familiar perspective, having had alcohol as a big part of social events and life in general, especially during his twenties/thirties. I found some of the writing style a bit 'matey' and irritating but the message was put across very well and clearly.Honest, funny and full of strategies on how to moderate your drinking, Chiles is genuinely passionate about his pints and the need to enjoy them without ever coming across as preachy - a fine line many have failed to tread . I am completely in the same headspace as in that I enjoy drinking and if I can do it moderately then why give up the habit of a lifetime.

WARNING* may cause the desire to travel to England to find these mythical pubs where sunshine and rainbows flow out of the taps. Being a B Corp means we’re committed to being a responsible business that has a positive impact for people and the planet, as we work for a world in which people drink mindfully and live well.

There was a conversation I had with Frank Skinner, we were having dinner and he said, oh you don’t drink very much. Perhaps he’s cut down from his past consumption but I’m not convinced the halo polishing kit needs to come out of the cupboard just yet.
