Dr Gerson said: “Our study shows that doll play can encourage social processing in children, regardless of their neurodevelopmental profile. The findings suggest that all children, even those who display neurodivergent traits commonly associated with autism, may use doll play as a tool for practicing social scenarios and developing social skills, such as empathy.” Imaginative Play: Our toys are carefully selected to encourage imaginative play, sparking creativity and helping children explore their limitless potential. The findings show that doll play activates brain regions associated with social information processing such as empathy, indicating that doll play may enable children to rehearse, use and perform these skills even when playing independently. This effect in the brain was similar between children displaying fewer and greater traits commonly associated with autism. The study found that when children played alone with dolls, they showed the same levels of activation of the pSTS as they do when playing with others. When the children were left to play tablet games on their own there was far less activation of the pSTS, even though the games involved a considerable creative element. In the study the play was split into different sections so the Cardiff team could capture the brain activity relating to each kind of play separately - playing with the dolls on their own; playing with the dolls together with another person (a research assistant); playing with the tablet game on their own and playing with the tablet game along with another person (a research assistant).

We use this area of the brain when we think about other people, especially when we think about another person’s thoughts or feelings,” said Dr Gerson.Brun 'Robust and large when extended so excellent for play. Folds in nicely for storage A little bit short for my 5 year old but she plays on her knees and is perfectly happy Would recommend!' Age-Appropriate Categories: We've organised our toys into age-appropriate categories, making it easy for parents and caregivers to find the perfect toys for their child's developmental stage. They found that doll play activated parts of the brain that allow children to develop empathy and social information processing skills, even when they were playing alone. Furthermore, they saw far less activation of this part of the brain when the children played with tablet computers on their own. Includes a baby changing area that changes into a comfy bed for naps and a table and chair for naptime, this baby care centre has all the essentials to keep baby happy! The nursery has a pivotating table with a chair, a baby-changing table/bed, a customisable photo frame, a mechanical mobile, and various storage for all the included accessories!

Children become very self-aware at a young age, so it is important to encourage the celebration of diversity. Multi-cultural doll play helps promote the celebration of cultural differences, similarities and diversity. Having a cultural variety of dolls in your school also encourages a child’s self-acceptance, self-identification, self-esteem and confidence – which are all vital for a child’s development. The team, led by Dr Sarah Gerson, from Cardiff University’s School of Psychology’s Centre for Human Developmental Science in collaboration with Dr Catherine Jones, Director of the Wales Autism Research Centre at Cardiff University, used state-of-the-art functional, near-infrared spectroscopy equipment to explore brain activation while children played with dolls and on tablets, both by themselves and with another person. The multi-year study is the first time that existing theories on doll play have been evidenced via brain imaging and neuroscience. Linzi 'Really easy to assemble and although takes up a bit of space when up it folds out of the way at night. Lots of different items to add to the play experience' Lead author Dr Sarah Gerson, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University’s Centre for Human Developmental Science, said: “This is a completely new finding. The fact that we saw the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) to be active in our study shows that playing with dolls is helping them rehearse some of the social skills they will need in later life. Because this brain region has been shown to play a similar role in supporting empathy and social processing across six continents, these findings are likely to be country agnostic.”

We are delighted to know, through neuroscience, that playing with Barbie may encourage the development of social skills such as empathy in children, including those who display neurodivergent traits commonly associated with autism. We look forward to uncovering even more benefits of doll play through our long-term partnership with Cardiff University.” In an 18-month study, the team monitored the brain activity of 33 children, aged between four and eight, as they played with dolls. Cochran 'Haven’t opened yet my little girl watches the video over can’t wait to see her little face when it’s all made up' Oolio 'Reserved and collected without hassle, easy to assemble and provides hours of play, would recommend.' As Autism includes a whole spectrum of traits, this research is posed to embrace that diversity of profiles across all children. Because of this diversity, what we find fascinating is that, regardless of the traits children have, their brain activity suggests that doll play is associated with thinking about other people.
