Despite having no tail, the Koala has an excellent sense of balance. With a lean, muscular body, and comparatively long, strong limbs, the Koala can support its weight when climbing. The front and hind limbs are nearly equal in length and much of the Koala’s climbing strength comes from the thigh muscle, which joins the shin much lower than in many other mammals.
Koalas typically inhabit open eucalyptus woodlands, and the leaves of these trees make up most of their diet. Because this diet has limited nutritional and caloric content, koalas are largely sedentary and sleep up to 20 hours a day. They avoid social interaction, and bonding exists only between mothers and dependent offspring. From the safety of the pouch, the joey leans out and feeds on the pap as it is excreted by the mother. Joeys consume pap, along with mothers milk, as a vital part of their diet for about 2 months. Moving from one to another of the trees that it has designated as its territory is the most energy a koala will commit in any 24 hour period. These dexterous little claws make climbing easier, for sure, but also help in feeding, as the koala usually pulls branches to its mouth with a front paw to slowly eat the leaves off.If you swing or bounce high enough, you’ll be able to soar through most of the course without grabbing onto any rings. The biggest issue koalas face is their own territorial and anti-social nature.
